Good Money After Bad part 2
« on: September 09, 2009, 04:17:38 AM »
Just to show you guys what I mean I shot some at a target at 10 meters.  There is no consistent error so I can't really tell what is wrong.  The three targets with the wiggle red lines around them are my control from my Gamo Whisper.  I haven't shot it in awhile or sighted it in in awhile so it was more erratic than normal.

I was shooting from my deck using a crushed down pillow for a rest on my Air Hawk.  For the Gamo I just used the back of my hand.  Can you think of any reason why it would shoot like this?

Looked like my Hammerli Titan, till I found the pellets it liked.  Maybe pellet selection, maybe stock screws loose, and/or maybe barrel crown damaged??

Could be it doesn't like the rest.  Almost looks like it's stringing vertically and to the right, although I don't know the order of shots.  I would try was bodiej suggested and change the rest.  Plus, of course, another type of pellet or two.  In fact, try some different pellets first.  Might clear it up and avoid the sleuthing.  If external variables like screws, crowns, hold don't do it, then I guess you will need to look inside at the seal, etc.  Good luck.  Nothing worse than a gun that won't hold POI.

Your Part 2 is just a continuation of Part 1 Randy. Do yourself a favor and send you gun off to let someone thatcanlook at it and determine if it is worth fixing.

Or sell it and buy another refurb..:)

I think I'll just buy a lot better gun.  I'm waiting for news on my 350.  Having looked around it would cost me about $100 to get all of the stuff to tune this gun.  I'm pretty sure it isn't worth it.  I'll give it away to somebody to shoot tin cans with or balloons.

I may though make a last hurrah and take out the spring and check the seal.  I haven't done that yet.  I mean it can't be messed up any worse than it is.

Well I finally got the courage to pull out the spring.  And take a look and see what the innards look like.  I am NOT a mechanical person, but I've pulled apart machineguns, rifles, pistols, tank guns, etc so I'm not a total idiot either.

The spring itself looked pretty good.  It doesn't have an end like I've seen some pictures on here of springs.

The first pictures show how dented this piece is. I suppose it is some sort of guide, but I'm not really sure.

The second picture is of the "seal" area. I'm not sure if it is bad or not, since I have never seen a normal one before.

Lastly, this must be the end of the compression area.

Those marks on the metal sleeve are from your cocking shoe. It is from over travel. I bet it made a racket when you would cock it..:)

The first pic is the piston liner, first part I throw away when working on the rifles, clean everything good and lube lightly then reassemble and start shooting. Check the front sight they have been known to have too small a hole for the .22 models and the pellet hits it as it goes down range...

The pic of that piston sleeve/liner just makes me cringe Randy. That is most certainly part if not most of your problem Buddy!! Mine was damaged also from the shoe but not nearly as bad as yours. Gene helped me repair mine & I "flared" it out. Mine is shooting as well as most any springer I have ever owned now. The pic of yours IMO shows it is well beond repair. If I were in your shoes,,, I would take Mike,s advice fully,,, throw it away. Eventually your spring may cant some but,,,IMO you will be way better off without the liner. Please keep us updated as to your progress. Dont give up Randy,,, the Ruger Airhawk is a very nice clone of the Diana 34 with loads of potential!! Good luck Buddy,,,,, Tim.

That is a beauty!

I bit the bullet today and ordered a JM spring and an Apex seal, plus the correct lubrications.  My friend with the metal working stuff is going to help with the crown.  It was only $40 or so worth of stuff and I can use the lubrications on my other guns.   I can't make it any worse!  Now if I can just find all of those pieces........

If you didn't order the spring set you WILL need a spring compressor to close it back up. Good luck with the upgrade.
