mounting a scope on 392 crosman
« on: November 08, 2009, 02:39:38 PM »
Hello guys, while i am not new to airgunnning or mounting scopes on springers, i am totally new to owning a Crosman 392 pumper.  So here is the deal,  i want to mount at least a 4x32 fixed or vriable power scope on this gun but it has no scope rails.  Most of the scopes i have seen mounted on this 392 are infront of the factory sights, don't think i want to go that way as i use that part of the gun for pump leverage.

I have seen the B-square weaver style base and ring combo but don't know how steadfast that set up is.

Some info and photos of your set up, that is if your set up is steadfast holding its zero without impact shift would be appriciated.

As i said i am new to the Benjamin 392 but would like to mount a scope in the near future, but need a bit of experienced help.   thanks    fb

You are holding the gun in front of the rear sight when you pump? I've never seen it done that way. I hold mine behind the rear sight. Whatever trips your trigger! :)
Pyramid Air has a mount made by Air Venturi that clamps to the receiver. It puts the scope almost an inch higher off the barrel than the standard Crosman barrel mounts. You can use a conventional rifle scope with that mount, but it takes Weaver-style rings and to me anyway it would really mess with my cheek weld to have the scope so high. Mac1 used to offer a mount that clamped to the barrel right in front of the receiver and was offset over the receiver so a conventional scope could be used. It's not available new any more though.
The B-Square mount is wobbly and the screws strip out of the receiver when you try to tighten it.

I tried a conventional 4X32 scope with the Crosman mounts ahead of the receiver, but I had to put both rings on the front end of the scope and let it cantilever back over the receiver. It wasn't too steady.
For me the best mount is just what you said didn't think you'd want, in front of the rear sight. I didn't think I would like there either, but now I do.  Haven't had any issues with the scope moving, except for the one time I dropped the rifle out of the case and it landed butt first on the concrete floor (broke the toe of the buttplate off, ouch!). Had to re-set the zero on the scope after that one, but the mounts never moved.

Hello to you andy, maybe i will need to change my point of leverage.   One more ???? what scope works for the set up you have?  I think the eye relief is a bit long for my usual scope i mount on my springers.   I seen on the crosman site the mounts you are using #B272  What about the scope?  And is there anything else i will need or should know to mount this system to my rifle?   And thanks for the help.  fb

Also, what rings work on the set up you have?

Hey FB,
I'm using a long eye relief Pistol scope on my 392. An NC-Star 2-7X32 to be exact (about $45). With the forward mount, at 2 or 3 power you can keep both eyes open for quick target acquisition. Also have an old 2.5 power pistol scope I picked up at a gun show. It works fine for general use, but I like being able to crank up the power for occasional precise paper punching.
As for rings, I'm using the least expensive ones I found, Simmons I think. They are pretty short. Not much of a head adjustment between open sights and the scope. One thing I did was to put pieces of black electrical tape on the surfaces of the Crosman mounts that contact the barrel and the pump tube, my thinking was to protect the finish of the gun and give the mounts more traction to stay in place. Seems to be working.

One other thing, not having a scope on top of the breach makes it easier for me to load the rifle too.

call mac1 they have exactly what u need i have gotten all my mounts from them for a benji .20 cal and ben franklin .22 1969.a better scope is the bugbuster 6x32 ao cause u will have no recoil at all but its a rifle that will reach pretty high velocity so a better scope will be better foryour sighting.
