Remington Summit
« on: December 31, 2009, 02:38:36 AM »
Stopped by Big 5 today and picked up a Remington Summit is .177 caliber. I talked the clerk over the phone and he told me the gun was their display model and had no box or paperwork, because of this he knocked the price down to $130. I asked him to set it aside and I would come take a look at. When I arrived and asked to see the gun I noticed 2 fairly significant chips in the high glass lacquer finish, not wood damage under the chips. Based on the dings in the stock he said he would let the gun go for $100 bucks. Based on the fact that it had a nice clear Crossman 3x9AO scope on it I thought the price was reasonable. The clerk said he was unsure as to the guns history, didn’t know if it was previously purchased and brought back or what. He said if I was unsatisfied I could return the gun. While walking out of the store to my truck I noticed that something on the gun was terribly loose. When I got in the truck and looked the gun over I noticed that the one piece scope mount was loose on the dovetails, loose the point of sliding quite freely. I brought the gun home and tightened everything up and went to basement to shoot it. The first couple of shots had the sharp crack of new gun, so I don’t believe it was shot before this occasion. After a few shots the loud crack was gone but now I had noticed something new. The cocking stroke is smooth and the firing cycle isn’t harsh at all. But upon closing the barrel it doesn’t lock up extremely positive. Meaning that it will open slightly and stay that way prior to completely unlocking. I even tested to see if the gun would fire with the barrel somewhat opened sure enough it did. Now I understand that the gun won’t find it’s true accuracy for quite sometime. But I’m less then pleased with the way the barrel lock up, or lack there of, feels. It was the only gun that Big 5 had and I would really like to have this gun in my arsenal. Should I contact Crossman and see what they are willing to do for me or should I just return it and get my money back? Can this problem be fixed without sending it back to Crossman? I believe that I have read here that some of you guys out there have this gun or at least what ever the gun is cloned after. How do yours feel when locking up? Any feedback would be gratefully appreciated.

My Summit in .22 locks up solid.  I would do a return, and look for another deal.

I've had really good service from Crosman. I'd give them a shout first and see if they can do anything or see what they recommend. You don't have to tell them the circumstances of the purchase, just where you bought it and the date. Warranty should cover it if it's under a year. They are slammed right now, some folks out sick and some on vacation but Kym or one of the few others in customer service would gladly help, I'm sure. Give them a call at (800) 724-7486 and ask for Kym or Cameron.

Maybe you can get it repaired or replaced without having to take it back for a refund.

Keep us posted & Happy Shooting!!!!

Dave

You may try 'snugging up' the pivot screw. If that doesn't work, then the detent ball spring is weak and a barrel assembly swap may be needed. The detent wedge in the action may be off some,....but that's not too likely the cause.  Crosman usually has many parts available. They might even give you a free exchange if you return the barrel assembly to them. I'd call Crosman and leave the big box store out of the picture all together. JMO,...Best Wishes, tjk

All you have to do is shim up the alive jam spring with 2 small washers to have a positive locking and might want to look at the muzzle brake.. it's a muzzle WEIGHT that contributes on it coming off lock when bumped when bench rest shooting.

My wife's nephew had a quest that hat a similar problem and Crosman promptly replaced it.  Its worth a shot, you might wind up with a brand new rifle.
