Gettin' nippy, ...
« on: January 29, 2010, 11:21:17 AM »
Temps aren't unusual for this time of year, - "about" 0* - but it's been kinda "breezy" the last week, with the "wind-chill" around 25* below. Haven't done any outside shooting in a month or so, - better break pretty soon.

We're down getting  high winds and down to 0 degrees this morning at Sunrise. Later morning the winds finally backed off and even thought it was only 5 degrees above zero, the Grays were out feeding.

It was 50 above one day last week !!!! Well, at least we had one day of global warming ! :D

And I thought 25 ABOVE today was a bit nippy. We are looking for a couple inches of snow here in the Northern Virginia area. It does feel cold, though, since the air is pretty damp. I'm burning up some deadfall and a bit of a hickory that I had taken down last year. Smells right nice. Was splitting wood today. I'm too old for that stuff but it's kind of fun. (Probably why I like springers.) My aunt, who is in her 80's, moved up to Maine a few years ago, just inland from the coast. She and my cousin (who she lives with) couldn't even get out to the little general store down the way when the weather got bad. After about a year of that she came to her senses and they moved to Savannah.

I know that this weather sure does catch up with you ! The cold, damp weather and low barometric pressure sure do play heck with the joints and bones.

Why I can remember back in the good old days, (HAHAHAHA), I would bundle up and trudge over a mile into my hunting spot, and stay all day in hopes of shooting a deer. But those were the days when I didn't have the sense to get out of the rain, literally !

Now all I can do is groan and moan about the weather,of which I have no control, except to turn up the thermostat and light the fire place !

Stay young, young men, wisdom and experience is not worth the aches and pains !!!! Or perhaps move to Nevada !!!!

We had -2C temps Thursday afternoon and around 6p.m the temps dropped to -12C (10F) with 40 to 60kph (35mph) winds.  Friday and Saturday will be in the -18C's with 50kph winds so the windchill would be in the -35C range (-30F).  No shooting outdoors for 2 days.....Sunday will be abit warmer.

RF, - your aunt's a wimp, .... I lived in Maine for about 12 years, '87 thru '99 on Southport Island, right next to Boothbay Harbor, the mid-coast region. I was a "property caretaker" for rich summer folks, (VERY rich) and a lobsterman. - Getting into your car on a winter morning isn't cold, - you only think it is. Fishing off the Maine coast in mid-winter adds a new meaning to the word "cold". ;)

Hey Bill, I think you got smarter with old age heh heh.

I used to wake up at 6 in the morning.....hook up with some friends.....drive an hour and a halfand go skiing for the whole day....come back home around 8p.m. Coldest temps when we were skiing or snowboarding.....-25C....I actuallyhad a few frostbite spots on my face because a few flakes ofsnow landed there and melted and refroze again.....and I didn't feel it until I got back home....ouch.I can't imagine doing that now. Yeah, I'm a WIMP now.
