RWS 34.... Complete Lube, Tune, Seal, Spring and New Guide..
« on: April 13, 2007, 03:26:20 AM »
Well guys, I have to say that the outcome of the RWS 34 Complete Lube, Tune, Seal, Spring and New Guide transformed this air rifle to a tack driver...:) Boy am I happy......... This RWS 34 is the second of two I purchased recently.. This particular RWS 34 is at least 15 years old but had never been used.... Maybe a few pellets at first when the owner first bought it for his collection.. But the wood and blueing was top quality all the way..

I called Bob yesterday morning and asked him about  how busy he was... He quickly said he had three to ship and another on da bench and UPS was coming with another round of air rifles that afternoon.. He also promptly told not to be bringing any of them B-3's back over if that was what I was calling him about.. hehe.... I asked him if he had a spring for the RWS 34 and in a soft voice asked him if he had time to make a spring guide for me...:) I quickly heard Fritz start barking up a storm.. Bob mumbled something but could not understand...:) I assume he was talking to Fritz.. hehe.. Anyway I got the go ahead to bring it over but he told me he was not gonna touch anything but a new spring guide and stay outa his way and don't even think about using my Chrony this time...:)

Anyway when I pulled the stock off and looked down at the spring it was drier than a pop corn fart..:) Like most of the RWS Air Rifles I have seen.. dry dry dry dry..:).... It was apparent that this one had not been shot in years becaust what little oil that had been on the spring was dried up. I pulled the spring out of the action along with piston.. Started cleaning and deburing whild CDT carved out a new spring guide on his lathe... It took me a three hours to complete my part of the deal and finally put everything back together.. I cocked the rifle and set the spring for a couple minutes.. Put a pellet in the chamber and took a shot out the back door.. Very smooth cocking and a very nice sound when shot.. Those RWS 34's have a certain noise, not like most springers.. It was sweet though and I collected my rifle and ran to the car before Fritz could catch me.. He collects the money you know...:)

This morning I was able to mount a BSA 3-12X50 on the RWS 34 with an adustible mount.. Set up scope for twenty yards and had it sighted in within 5 shots.. Moved the target back to my 40 yard marker and started to nail them bulseyes, one pellet on to another... hehe.. I think I put around 50 or 60 shots in six bulseyes so far and only a couple went outside the red dot.. I do not have my camera back yet so no pics.. But as soon as I do I will post some more pics..

By the way, the RWS 34 sounded pretty dry and twangy before I tuned it but now it is a completely different Air Rifle... :) I enjoyed doing the tune myself and taking my time with it.. I have another RWS 34 that I am gonna do myself in my own garage soon and will post the results on that one also..:)

Gene, was there a big difference after the tune with the recoil/twang?  Thanks.

Ya know Gene,,, this is not good,,,,,,, with all this talk about the 34,,, it's quality workmanship, how nice it shoots, how accurate it is,,, I keep finding myself going back to  Midsouth and staring at their ad for the 34.     I can feel my finger starting to twitch already,  I know these signs very well, this is not good,,, I'm gettin ready to slam that "order" button down.

I think I need an "intervention" !!!

That's true Mike,  only thing is that if I'm gonna catch hell from the wife (and that is a certainty) I'm at least gonna have the 34 in my gun safe to make me feel better after all the yellin is over.  :)

Yes David, like no twang but still you have some recoil but without the twang the recoil is not as strong.. More like a shorter and quicker recoil. Not more pronounced but subdued.. I have been shooting it all day today, trying different pellets. It is not nearly as hold sensetive as the Shadow's.. .. You can tell the difference in quality by just shooting it..:)

I know what you mean David..:) I used to feel the same way when I would take my other air rifles over to CDT for a tune.. hehe.... Now we have become very close and he puts up with me dragging air rifles over when he has a lax period which is not often enough for me... hehe

I know  you would really appreciate the difference David..

Good Luck

LOL Gene, I can see Bob right behind you just waiting for you to mess it up and Fritz right next to your leg waiting for the attack signal hehe. And there's Gene working away with bead's of sweat dripping onto his tune and glancing over his shoulder looking for Bob to release the hound LOL. Ed

Load up them picture of the targets that got shewed up by them 60 pellets, want to see what mine might due in the near future.
My boss gave me a very special gift a few weeks back his commemorate Diana 34, the rifle has a white line ventilated butt pad and a special, I believe it's bronze medallion on the stock that reads (100 Jahre DIANA 1890-1990 ) He had it in his gun safe for 18 or 19 years. He purchased the rifle brand new and he also gave me the paper work that came with the rifle. It's a very nice rifle in .177 Cal. I loved it so much that I went out and bought another in .22 cal the last one is just a Diana 34 not a commemorate, I had it for 3 days and 4 kills to it's credit all ready. I need to tune this baby's,now guy's  not that I know how but I will learn.
My big? what do you guys know a bout the Vortek silencing system?  would that work good in my rifles and give me good power to hunt with.
My rifles do just fine now but just wondering if they might be better with that tune. thanks in advance yfis, dan

Wow that is an old post..:) I do not think I still have the pictures of the targets I shot but when I get the time I will pul her out and shoot some 30 yard groups fer ya. If you take your time and do everything just right you wil come out with a fantastic shooter. You are very lucky to get that model. Mine is a 1984 model. I have a custom stock on her now and have shortened the barrel wiith a nice muzzle brake on her.
