How many hunt w/o a scope?
« on: March 07, 2010, 01:02:10 PM »
Seems the pellet path trajectories are rather complicated when scoping. I wonder if using the sights would be easier and more accurate?

I've tried leaving one of my rifles with just the open sights but unfortunately my eyes and open sights just don't work well together anymore so all my rifles are scoped....

Way back in the day I used to hunt without scopes. When I started using them I never looked back,as head shots became the norm rather than occasional.I feel that if your good with open sights, you will be GREAT with a scope.I've found that setting up scopes is really easy once you get it down. It's way more precise than open sights.

LIH,

I've got the same problem. I used to be deadly accurate out to 30 yards or even further with iron sights on my old Blue Streak, with 17 year old eyes. More hits than misses on head shots only.

Nearly 30 years later, I need good light to hit a sparrow at 12 yds using iron sites. Sure, I made some longer shots at distance with iron sites, but if it was overcast, I doubt I could make a 3" group at 20 yds.

The scope isn't just nice, it's imperative for older eyed folks. Our depth of field just isn't there anymore.

All my shooters are scoped for precision shot placement except my 1377 pistola. She's deadly accurate out to 20yrd's if I do my part, G-hog met his maker at 15yrd's.Ed

Using the iron sights on my Winchester rimfire used to be my favorite way to hunt Squirrels. These days I need my reading glasses just to see where the darn sights are on the gun.

Now it's scopes on everything.

At least I still have very good distance vision.

lol, I even use a low powered scope on my turkey gun. I believe that a scope is much faster once you learn how to bring the scope to your eye, and not your eye to the scope. Less chance of you shooting over something when you shoot in a hurry.

Wow..perfect shot placement on the G-hog Shadow.I agree .....the 1377 is accurate.I had one years ago as a teenager.I remember shooting the heads off of grasshoppers at ten feet.Reaching middle age though, and I need a scope to do something like that.
