Our Red Squirrels here are about 2/3 the size of a Gray, but they make up for it in bad attitude. They are rather aggresive for their size and often try to drive Grays out of an area.
Because of the markings, some folks mistakenly think they are very large Chipmunks.
When it's hard to see the Red's coloring, they get mistaken for young Grays. They are about the size that young Grays are when they first start to venture out on their own.
What's most distinctive in any light conditions is the way Reds move. Much more 'hyper' and seemingly faster than the Grays normally move. If you see a small Squirrel that acts like it's had 6 cups of coffee ..... most likely it's a Red.

And if you do a web search, technically they are known as "American Red Squirrels" not to be confused with the "Red Squirrels" in Europe.
Sure are a challange to hunt.
