Grackle And Crow
« on: March 17, 2010, 07:49:10 AM »

They came, I saw, I shot.

Two days ago as I was walking out the door on my way to work, I heard a noise that is unmistakable.
You know the sound, something like a kid rubbing his fingers on a blown up balloon, Sqeeeeak.
I ran in the house and grabbed the .22 Marauder. Looking up in the trees I spotted my first Grackle of the year.
A 35 yard shot was easy pickings. He now adorns my from yard as a decoy for more. See the first picture below.

My second target came into view today as I was looking out my window. I have been watching these things for weeks now in the neighborhood. As a matter of fact, as I was bringing my oldest son home from school today, I spotted them again and told my son, "they are going to mess up soon and get near my zone". Less than 30 minutes later, here I am looking out the window and spot this one coming down out of the trees into the neighbors ditch. I grabbed my BSA Lonestar and opened the window. There was two of them in the ditch by now. I couldn't see them as there was a tree blocking my view. I made my needed AO adjustments and then out he came. 1 second target acquisition and then I let the 21Grn Kodiak fly. It met the mark with a load pop. The crow took one hop and that was it. I sat still because more crows were in the trees. I didn't want them to know what had just happened. I waited for them to leave and then went to pick this one up. Not to shabby of a shot. I killed this crow at 84 yards. he now adorns the edge of the wood line as another decoy. Looks like my season is starting out at last.

The Crow is the Second Picture Below.

2010 Kills

12 Tree Rats
36 Grackles
47 Cow Birds
4 Starlings
2 Crows
1 Ground Hog

I couldn't believe it myself.

That decoy does look very life like ED

Sometimes we`re not as good as we think in range estimation. Last fall I nailed a Crow and I thought it was a 30 something yard shot......later on I measured the distance with a rangefinder and it was 53 yards....holy smokes.....what a difference.

I love that nutter mount. I know the gun is photoshopped in, but is the mount real?
