Trail XL G-Hog Hunt

Earlier today I spent some time at the duck farm on a pest hunt and while I was there I saw my first G-hog.  So, this afternoon I returned to the farm and stalked around for the last 2 hours of daylight in the hopes of letting the .22 XL harvest her first G-hog.  Well, I did spot 2 good sized g-hogs out and about, but they both saw me first.  

At least I know they are active now so I start getting in some late afternoon hunts as the weather and time permits.   The XL is gonna have to wait just a bit longer for her first "medium" sized game harvest

I thought for sure that I would see a fat G-hog laying next to the XL. You know that you need to break her in on one bro, have one in no time.   eD

Until the grass and foliage grows enough to give me some stalking cover I'm going to have to hunt  little bit differently in order to nail one.  I'm going to have to set up a ground blind  near one of the burrows and wait em out    I"m going to try that technique on my next trip to the farm....

I did that with prairie dogs.  The easiest thing to remember and learn is to sneak up on the hole and see which way it slopes.  Then get to the backside.  That will give you more time to aim and shoot before they swivel their heads.

I usually  like to wait until they are completely clear of the hole before I shoot, the further from the hole the better.  As you know they are real tough critters and even if they're mortally hit they have the tendency, especially if they're close to the hole, to use their last bit of life and strength to reach the hole.  Once they reach the hole they just slide right down and most of the time you lose your prize.  If they're actually in the hole it's to easy for them after being hit to slide back down and then I lose my dinner  

If I'm hunting with my .22 cal Condor I'll take a clean head shot even if the g-hog is in the hole simply because the Condor puts their lights out instantly and they just slump over dead, but even with the Condor I'd prefer to wait until they are out of the hole completely if I can.  G-hogs really impress me with their strength and will to live,,,, very very tough critters...

I'm still trying to locate some.  There are a BUNCH on this farm nearby, but it is right on the main drag of Knoxville!  I'm just not sure if it is in the city or not, but I'll go ask the land owner.  If it is in the city, I can get arrested for shooting a "bb gun".
