Benjamin Discovery Rifle and Pump
« on: April 26, 2010, 04:30:18 AM »
I live in Northeast Alabama and don't have access to a facility to refill a scuba tank so I can shoot pcp rifles.  I was looking at the Benjamin Discovery rifle with the pump.  Is this as efficient as a regular pcp rifle? How hard are they to pump up by hand?   Any input would be appreciated.  Thanks

Efficient,yes... you get a good number of shots on a fill.  Not super powerful, but the 19-22 foot pounds the .22 version puts out as factory set is a good balance for the gun.

Easy to pump, just take it slow and let the pump stay cool.  First fill up from zero pressure will take awhile (like about 120-145 pump strokes).  But once it's filled, will usually refill once the gun gets down to about 1000 PSI, so topping it back up to 2000 usually takes 45-50 strokes.

Not for people in a hurry to shoot, have to have the patience to pump slow.

Lot of people will probably tell you that you "gotta do this mod." or "you gotta do the trigger mod."    You ain't "gotta" do jack.  Once you have it, shoot it.. a month from then, if something is still bothering you, THEN look into changing whatever that might be.

I have to walk with forearm crutches, had four bypasses, and I'll be 69 years old next month, so trust me on this, pumping the gun up slow is not a problem.  I may buy one or I have to move down on the coast where the dive shops are.  Thanks for the reply

I really like this piece of brilliant insight into the world of air rifles!!  Best advice I've ever heard.

Pumping is easy as it's only up to 2000psi! Most of the other PCPs need 3000psi+ On a 2000psi fill you can get 25-30 good hard shots but if you get the power adjuster you can increase the number of shots two fold or even more at the cost of a little power! The gun is very light and small but very enjoyable to shoot! What ever you decide, you will find lots of friends here to offer advice or just shoot the breeze! :)

I'm 57 and have been pumping and shooting one for about 2 years now.177 cal.  Pumping to 2000 is not a problem, but mine is most efficient at 1000-1800. Anything higher wastes shots while velocity curve gets to peek FPS. From 1800 to 1000 I get around 30 shots in the mid 800's with CP 10.5 and no more than 30 FPS spread which is fine for my needs.
It does take around 140 for initial fill but after that about 50 -60 brings it up from 1000-1800 again.
I just got a Marauder which is a bear to pump between 2800-3000. I currently  have my Discovery and pump for sale on the yellow. If it doesn't sell I am coming your way end of May for a week on Smith Lake and could let you try it.

I've had 2 Disco's 1 in 177 and 1 in 22 cal both with a pump. I have a hurt left arm still have no problems pumping up the disco. I got rid of my 177 cal disco kept my 22 cal Disco as well as 2 mrods I got. You shouldn't have any issue with pumping rifle up. or get a scuba tank and use pump to top off at rifles sweet spot. The only thing I am gonna do to mine down the road is get a TKO for the muzzle I shot tree nutters last hunting season with mine nice light rifle.

mine in .177 took 190 pumps to bring it up from empty. that puts the rifle at 2250 psi. my powercurve starts at 2100 and then i get 32 fullpower shots at an average 868 Fps with crosman heavies (30 yards, dime size groups...) then the group starts to open up. I stop at 47 shots as the velocity falls under 700 fps and in my opinion, compensating that much is not easy and may cause a miss that could maim an animal. then is only 75 pumps back to 2150 psi. I calculated mine to use 32 psi per shot. the 32 shots in the power band are good enough to shoot FT with. pumping is not a chore at all in the disco...

I have one in .177 and one in .22 caliber and they are very easy to air up with the pump.  Both of my discos sweet spot is right around 1800 psi so I don't even go all the way up to 2000.  They are great hunting guns, very accurate with plenty of power for small and even medium sized game.  As for adding all the "mods"..... you can if you want but you don't have to.  Both of my rifles, with the exception of the TKO brakes, are bone stock....
