More chrony testing with the trailnpxl
« on: April 17, 2010, 12:53:20 PM »
I hand selected these pellets for test carefully stacked em Gammo 16.2 grn pointed and also used beeman field target 14.3
Gamo  892.2    884.0    891.1    899.6    895.8    898.5    886.8    887.5    895.7    886.0

beeman 883.0    874.6    895.0    884.7    888.5    882.9    883.3    869.6    876.1    868.7

I did this test 2 more times gamo pellets are faster then the lighter beemans and the gamos are producing allot of fpe compared to lighter pellets i also tried  crosman premiere domes they were also very close to the beemans in speed. Im posting this cause i think it is unussual for a heavy pellet to go faster then a lighter . i did a similar test other day that the gamos won  in speed cause the others were preditor pellets which fit real tight in barrel compared to the looser fit gamos. i sized these to the breech amd rejected may pellets till i was sure test was fair any idea s whats going on here. also no more smoke out of the trail at all.

Weight of the pellet is only one of the factors in how fast a pellet travels down a barrel.

Paul is entirely correct..... there are many other factors involved not the least of which is pellet shape, skirt shape, skirt softness, pellet hardness, and a bunch more I can't even think of.....

During my chrony testing of different guns and pellets I have very often seen heavier pellets give faster fps than lighter ones......

I've had the best results with JSB Exact Jumbos (15.8), followed closely by the Jumbo Heavies (18.1).  By flaring the skirts with a pen, I have been able to get the extreme spread in a 10-shot string as low as 2.5, and the 15.8's velocity actually increases 40-50 FPS.  Tried the same thing with CP's, but the accuracy went to hell and there was no velocity advantage.  Kodiaks/Baracudas give me the highest FPE at around 24-25, but the JSB's are more accurate, and the FPE is just slightly lower at 23-24.  As a side note, I also tried deep-seating various pellets, but only got less accuracy and velocity as a result.

I usually fire 10 shots after switching pellets before doing any more accuracy testing for the exact reason you mentioned.
