NPSS barrel catch problem resolved
« on: May 08, 2010, 11:40:37 AM »
A few weeks ago, I posted the trouble I had concerning  the barrel of my new Crosman NPSS 22 not staying locked after cocking. It would fall open if the rifle was placed on a rest with any force...even just inadvertently slapping the forearm with a palm could cause it to fall. I had no idea what I could have done to get it to lock up.It was suggested here that the barrel chisel spring was weak or broken so I contacted Crosman and was advised to return it under warranty for service. In the included note explaining the problem, I asked that this rifle be repaired and sent back to me since it was an extremely accurate shooter. I wanted this gun back since there were no signs of any seal problem that plagued some of these models.I thought fixing a simple barrel catch should be easy and I'd get it back quickly. The upshot is...they kept it 2 weeks, then sent me a new Remington NPSS as a replacement. They also included a new scope and mount, even though I just returned the rifle. SO...I have a new NPSS with scope but no idea what fix -- if any-- could be done to the barrel chisle/lock-up issue. I had hoped to report what could be done with this problem since I knew others have had this happen. This gun seems to lock up tightly with no indications of the former problem. Stay tuned...

Ya Gamo had an issue with the double chisel lock up on their springers. They finally change the design. The best lockup I have ever seen has been the ball lockup. RWS uses that style along with a few other manufacturers. In your case I think it was a bad batch of actions that got through. Best of luck with your new baby.:) I sure love mine..

I never had a problem with the barrel lockup catch on my Crosman NPSS, but then again, my gun didn't come with breach spacers installed, so I went out and found the perfect substitute - 5/16" brass washers from Lowe's.  The fit is nice and tight, and when I reinstalled the pivot pin, I tightened enough so that it takes a really solid whack to break open the barrel.  No barrel droop problems for me with my rifle.

I'm about to undertake a BS Super Streak conversion to a gas ram.  I have my lathe, got the delrin and am set to make gas ram shims.
