Match grade pellets?
« on: June 06, 2010, 03:09:12 PM »
Do match grade pellets like the RWS-R-10 Match made a noticeable difference?
I know that’s a big question because there are about a hundred variables.
But all thing being equal would they make a difference?

Most match grade pellets are of the wadcutter type and if you are shooting target or target competition, it may help but wadcutter type pellets are for the most part the worst pellet a person can use for hunting, especially beyond 25 yards. For hunting, a dome type is most preferred by most hunters as a rule.

Ifn yer askin arbot acc. liken on yer ottar post an sach LOL.yeah better Q.C. make's for a more acc. pellet, control over the wieght, shape & the same mold making all the pellet's in your selection, it stand's to increase acc. over all. But if your not a top notch target shooter(MATCH GRADE SHOOTER)me & you won't notice a big increase for the money spent.

The RWS R10 is a great pellet, I have looked closely at alot of different match wadcutter pellets and  it is a consistent weight and shape/tails etc that you are paying $ for which should equal accuracy.  Some people weigh and sort each pellet in search of a consistent weigh and shape and  I think it does help accuracy. In my case its a very small difference indeed and may even be a physiological effect :))  I still think its worth trying different pellets to check which one you AG likes best. In my AG Wadcutters work best up to 20+ish yds. I have been happy with the rws meisterkugln and the rws Hobby pellets they seem to work well in almost all AG's:)

The gun I shoot on a regular basis is pellet sensitive and prefers ones with larger diameter heads. The H&N Baracuda Match and Beeman FTS are more consist ant and I get less loose fitting pellets in a tin. They also produce less fliers and are great for hunting.

not for us mortals

Unfortunately all things are not equal.
2 major factors are range/distance and skill.

As was mentioned, the match pellets are meant for competition shooting at 10 METERS (approx 33 feet).
I shoot Daisy and Crossman pellet from WalMart in my plining rifles at 10m and they go where I aim them.  Push the range out beyond 10m and the flat front of the wadcutter is NOT aerodynamic and will deteriorate your accuracy.

Then skill factor.  Can you shoot well enough to make use of the extra precision.
IMHO for us mere mortals, you will NOT see a difference between good pellets and match grade pellets.

I shoot Vogel Sport, even in matches.  This is Vogel's "training" pellet, not their match pellets.

My guns seem to like the crossman premier pellet. Wadcutter always seem to go in sideways. The CPHP and Ultra Magnums make nice round holes at 10m. Like you said they hit where I aim them (most of the time). I was just thinking maybe the match grade wadcutter would make a round hole.

That's strange Yellowstone they should make a nice paper punch hole for you out to at least 20 yd's,is the crown on barrell O.K.(no nick's or such)target nice an straight to impact(no lean)they should not be keyholeing like that?

Well if I tack down the target tight on heavy cardboard backing it’s a better hole.
But once the cardboard stats to get shot up they start key-holing.

I guess the question is are they keyhole's or a tear then?I use a 2x12 back stop an can recover my pellet's from it(at 20 or so yd's)try a wood or such stop & look at pell, skirt should be wrapped around head of pell if it's hitting straght on,hope this help's some,be safe in chooseing a stop.

that is a target problem

At 10 meters, the pellet should NOT be key-holing.

If you are using copy paper for targets, my guess is you are getting target tears, not key-holing.
Copy paper targets have to be secured to a good backer.  The backer is like a cutting board for the knife (the pellet).   If there is no cardboard behind the target, where the pellet hits, the paper will tear.  So you have to regularly replace the backing, or move the target around the backer to keep cardboard behind the target.  And the tighter the groups, the more you have to replace the backer or move the target.  And if you shoot TIGHT groups, you may have to limit the number of shots per target.
