I tried to get a pic
« on: June 21, 2007, 12:49:33 PM »
Earlier today, while I was rebooting my computer, my oldest daughter came in and asked me, what kind of bird looks like a hawk with a white head, I told her a bald eagle, so she tells me there's 1 circling around out front. There haven't been any around here for a looong time, so I went back to what I was doing. A few minutes later my youngest daughter came in and said there were 2 of them, ok and I went back to work. About that time the wife comes in, come look at this and see if it's a bald eagle, ok be there in a minute. Sure enough there wrere 2 bald eagles circling my house, so I told the wife to get the camera, I'm going fishing. I got my rod and tied a small stuffed rat on the line, figured I could toss it out and maybe get it to dive on it. I threw it out and twiched it a few times, one of the eagles saw it and started a very tight circle right above it. I told my wife to get ready to take a pic, it dove down and about 10 feet off the ground he turned and went back up. He was moving so fast all you could see was a blur, no pic. I tried for about another hour and that was all they would do, gotta get some better bait. They must have realized it was not real before they got to it, but I thought atleast one of them would have grabbed it long enough to get a few pics. It was a wonderful sight to see them soaring around for a couple of hours though. If I see them again I'll try to go fishing and maybe get a close up pic. Anyway I just thought I would share my nonproductive back yard fishing trip, hehe.

That must have been really neat Mike. I have only sighted about a half dozen in my life time. They sure look beautiful floating around in those thermals looking for food. I sure hope they breed more so we all can see more of them in the  future. One of natures beauties in flight..:)

They say we have a few up here Mike, but I think they stay out of the New Jersey area, they tell me that they are real smart birds!

I have only seen one in my life, and at a great distance, and that was memorable.

I have seen about 10 or so, but only in the last 6 years or so. Before that I had never seen one other than on the TV etc. I got a real good look at one of them that was eating on a dead dear carcus. Man, they are big! Nothing compares to seeing them up close.

I dont think I would have ever thought of "fishing" to bring them closer... Great idea!

Several years ago they started building nests on towers, in hopes of bringing them back to the area. Evidently it worked, because this was the first 2 I've seen in this area. Hopefully there will be more.

About 25 years ago I lived in central Florida for a couple or three years, and I saw several bald eagles at one time while taking a boat trip down the St. Johns River, I think it was below Blue Springs at a place where the river widened out a good bit. They were a couple hundred yards off around a few large dead trees close to the bank. Pretty impressive looking; unfortunately I didn't have a camera or binoculars at the time (I did have a lot better eyesight back then though ;~).

My brother who lives up in Skagway Alaska tells me that they see them fairly often up there.

I guess they've been doing good enough in the lower 48 so that they were removed from the 'endangered' species list and moved to 'threatened' a few years ago. Hopefully they'll continue to increase in numbers.
