Rabbit Hunting, Again
« on: July 31, 2007, 06:11:37 PM »
I was not going to go rabbit hunting today, Tuesday, but my son got out of school and asked if we could go.  Must have been hard sitting there all day doing math and reading, lol.  He didn’t have to twist my arm much.  We went to the same field today as we did yesterday, and we jumped a rabbit while walking down the path that has trees overgrowing it.  The rabbit was higher than we were, and the shooting sticks could not be used, so I took the shot.  I missed the first shot, trying to thread it through some branches hanging to the ground.  I moved over and put the next pellet right through his chest.  We picked him up and continued to the field.  This rabbit had a notch taken out of his ear.  Run in with a coyote at some time?  A cottontail ran to the brush line as we walked the field, so no shot there.  It was getting towards dusk when I spotted a rabbit sitting near a tree.  I had my range finder (44 yards), so I told my son to aim the RWS 48 dead on.  He put the crosshairs on the shoulder and pulled the trigger.  The rabbit looked like it got bowled over, but he got up and went under the tree and through some brush.  We walked around the corner and we jumped the same rabbit, who nicely sat still as my son set up on the shooting sticks at 30 yards.  Wamp!  Neck shot, and another rabbit down.  We both ran over to look at the cottontail, and while I was looking at it, I noticed a chunk of its fur had been pealed back from its shoulder.  My son’s first shot had evidently grazed the cottontail, which means I need to explain quartering away shots to him.  Another fun evening hunt!

Excellent story and excellent pics.  The pic with your son proudly holding the rabbits is priceless.
I'm already looking forward to your next trip.  :)

Thanks for all the kind words.  My son loves to go hunting - it is great to see him get so excited when he makes the shot.  Fun stuff.  Can't wait to go again.

Thanks Bill.  It is fun.  I used to go hunting only during deer season, but small game hunting with air rifles is loads of fun.
