poorman's chronograph
« on: July 18, 2006, 12:46:02 PM »
Our local shooting club has a chrono but it is not that easy to get to. Has anyone got a penetration test method/chart that will allow me to see how well my CFX is holding as to velocity?? I was thinking of a chart that relates layers of cardboard of a set thickness or plywood or whatever to muzzle speed for a given pellet weight. Perhaps using a pellet we all shoot such as the Premier or one we can all buy such as the Gamo Hunter. Anyone made a knock over action target that can help us gauge velocity/power factor??

This looks interesting;  http://230nsc1.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/balpen.html ; But it's probably a bit more difficult to build one than it is to do penatration tests. HTH,

I like the idea, just don't know if I  can do the math as my wife keeps our checkbook balance!!

I wish I could say that there was some sort ov penetration test that would substitute reasonably well for a chronograph...but there isn't.You might be able to tell a sick gun from a happy one,but there are just too many variables.I dont think penetration tests will give you numbers within 100fps of reality.

Gone up a little bit, but reconditioned F1 Chronys are still being sold for about $50 (U.S.)....too many other variables for test media to be real accurate, but for $50 can know for sure.
