Shoot and eat practice run....

Well just to keep in shape, I met with John up at his place in Gainesville yesterday for a
a shooting session.

I got there at 9:30 and john had the place all set up already. He had it set diagonally across the back yard
that gave us just over 35 yards We set up bright orange paint balls to use for mini sniping.... boy they are
cool to shoot, very gory "blood" splats ..hmmmm !

It got up around 100 degrees (it didn't feel that bad though) we had a great spot under the Mulberry tree and
we had spanned a tarp between it and the van, perfect!

My 850 acted up after the first air tank ran out and never got over 600fps for the rest of the day. In fact it went
as low as 470fps at one point. I still have to figure out what has happened.
We shot till almost 5:30 and had a lot of fun. I know I say this every time we shoot..... but every time I shoot
both my 460 and B-40 I like them even more thanbefore. They performed flawlessly taking out paint balls with
great effect.

Hey buddy we forgot pics of the hunting hehe. We did have some pretty good shade and it wasnt too warm or uncomfortable. I will prolly be building the shootin station next weekend.

Besides that.. the pic of me looks like a crimnal trying to sell stuff out of
the back of his car hehe!!

Looks like a lot of fun, guys! Been too hot to shoot here for the last 3 weeks, almost 110(or more ) every day. Roald, was that your post on the Centerpoint scope on the Yellow?  Been thinking of getting one ( want more mag. , but got no more money now, haha)/

no too sure Ric... could have been, I'm rbva over there.
They are nice scopes and well worth the money though.
If I ever have to buy another scope, it'll be one more of those
that's for sure.

THAT is exactly what happened my good buddy, "valve lock".  My super ultra extra double tuned CO2 guns used to always experience valve lock up over 90-95F.  The gun will still shoot, it just wont have any b@!!$.  If you get it hot enough it will stop shooting altogether.  I had besides my springers, a Mike M. tuned AR2078, a home tuned QB78, and a VERY modded Crosman 2260 back at the end of last year, and they were sold for that very reason.  I love how easy CO2 guns are to mess with, mod, inexpensive for the most part, but when it's hot here in Texas or cold here in the Winter months they aren't much fun to shoot.  I hate to say it pal, but the Darkside is calling, you will give in....do NOT RESIST!

Today I went to Steve's for some "wood work talk" and also of course the "158 yard challenge".  I brought my Talon .177 with the 18" barrel and my BSA Superstar for close in plinking.  The BSA is deadly to ANY can within 50 yards shooting Crowmagnums....but the Talon scored two nice direct hits on cans out on the dam at 158+/- yards.  That Talon is shooting 10.5 grain Kodiaks at right around 980fps for a good consistant 40 shots at least...Steve only hit twice with his new regulated BSA Superten in the same amount of time, so I don't feel bad.  The visit was as much about wood work as it was about shooting, and as usual I walked away overloaded with new woodworking knowledge.

I have the solution to the valve lock problem on it's way to me in the mail.
It just requires a slightly stronger hammer spring in our climate..... whch also adds
a few fps. I'll retest it after it's back together again and post the results.

LOL a weak spring is what we are calling valve lock now? Hmmm.......I think heat related valve lock is caused by the liquid and vaporCo2 freezing in the valve. And I have yet to have my QB valve lock. And I know for a fact that I have been outside when it was 100 degrees or better. And realisticly it definately wasnt hot enough on sunday for the valves to be locking up hehe.

P.S. Hey Roald (opens trench coat) wanna buy a scope?

The guys that have done this have been in the game for longer than a few months and
so far all report success as well as improved fpe.

Hey I'm just learning and will try anything that sounds logical .... at least once
If it works, great, if not..... this is where the fun part of air gunning comes in no?

Valve lock is caused by CO2 increasing in pressure with heat and overwelming the hammer spring and hammer impact, I don't know what they call a frozen valve except "too many shots too fast".  In the winter months the pressure of CO2 drops, it wont give you valve lock, but your FPS will drop due to less pressure...and perhaps the frozen valve ports like you describe.  What I noticed with mine, outside of low chrony numbers was vertical stringing of my groups at distance.  Not so bad in my backyard at close range, but definately off at  distance say beyond 20 yards
