850 takes Squirrel
« on: December 08, 2007, 01:25:40 PM »

We had an unseasonably warm day yesterday (almost 80)with today supposedly being the same.
I packed up early this morning and took off to John's place in Gainesville (about 1.5hr drive)
for a paper punching session that we spent over an hour planninglast night.
Well..... the day turned out dreary and cold, starting out at 60 and getting colder as the day wore on.
We were still having fun despite the cold though.
The temperatures had caused the 850's MVdrop to about 650fps, but even so it was still spot on all day.
Anyhow around lunch time this tree rat came and sat in the big oak tree to the right of the targets (see pic) John, not being able to see from where he was, gave me the nod to take it.
It was between 20 to 25 yards (the targets are at 37yards) and I aimed for the spot between his eye and ear. It was spot on. He dropped out of the tree like a stone.
He did do the "death dance" for a good 10 to 15 seconds though, kinda like a chicken after it's head gets chopped off....

So even at 650fps (maybe a tad faster) at 25yards the 850 will still knock a squirrel on it's butt.
The moreI shoot this thing the happier I get with it :-)

Way to go Roald..:) Nice shot placement. Well you have sold me on the 850..:) Was over at Bob's yesterday and we went to lunch as usual. Told him I was gonna buy one soon. He told me he saw them for $185.00, but could not remember where. Yikessss.....  Well anyway he is very curious about the 850 to. He has looked at all the parts diagrams and pretty much knows what makes it a good power plant. If I could find a new one for $185.00 I would jump on it right away.. hehe

Thanks for sharing

Nice shooting there, I'm wondering how many of those pests you guys have over there you seem to have non-stop live targets.

Thanks fo rthe nice comments guys, Ed..... I must warn you that buying one of these 850's will alter the
way you feel about airguns.... no joke.
I intend posting this "message" on Airgun Gate too but you'll get to see it here first......

It has taken me quite a while to realize that I have not been hanging out on the Forums as much as I used to.
It has taken me even longer to figure out why this is.
I have discovered that the purchase of my RWS / Hammerli 850 is the cause.

I realized all this after reading a post written by a friend of mine last night.

It was not long after I purchased this gun that I started selling off a few of my other guns, even ones
that I had sworn were keepers and would never part with.
The 850 nestles right in the middle of all of them where it should - and easily does the work of either
a casual plinker or serious hunter.

In my case, the experience of making my own Re-fillable Air Source CO2 can spawned a whole new hobby,
Modding. Once that bug hit, I went all out and equipped my garage to continue modding my own guns
and that hobby is consuming me as I write this. Even to the point of making my own stocks…..

In a nutshell, to say that the 850 has opened new doors in my hobby life would be a gross understatement.
Before I got mine, all I could think about was getting another air gun ... and another .. and another after that ad nauseam.
It was a seemingly insatiable addiction that the 850 COMPLETELY satiated - for me anyway.

So for those of you that have heard about this amazing little CO2 rifle and were thinking of getting one,
go for it and get one.
I’m sure that you will enjoy yours as much as I have mine.

Roald, you are afflicted buddy..:) I hope you have not made your wife a RWS 850 widow..:)  I always wondered why you were selling your stock of springers off. I do not imagine you have any of your QB's left either..:) I think I have a couple QB's and one Crosman MA 2250 that I may sell before or after I get my 850. Did not think I would ever sell them but to have a CO2 rifle that can shoot as accurate as they do and not have to keep pusing pellets in them each time I shoot sounds very pleasing to me..:) But I have springes and I love to shoot them because of the challenge they bring me. So at this point I do not think I could sell any of them off but you can never say never..:)
