Power tests

Hello All,
I have a suspicion that my un-modded out of the box AR2078 is over the UK legal limit for power
My modded QB78 seems a little wimpy when compared to it. The AR' seems to have a lot more "thunk" to it when shooting beer bottles. The seller of the AR' who's a dealer told me that every so often he's get the odd one which is way over the limit of 12ft/lb but mostly they are around the 7-9 ft/lb mark. He did not test mine before shipping....Hmmm  :0
I don't have a chrono' to test it and my local gun shop wants £40, around US$80.00 to test it!
Last night I tried a few tests with fresh fruit but both guns rip through oranges, lemons and spuds.
Can anyone recommend a simple comparative test to help me out?
Otherwise I'll have to spend money on a chrono and not another rifle

Hard to find something to shoot that is nearly the same from one day to the other, much less something that is the same across an ocean.

Beeman use to use Al. soft drink cans...your basic "Coke" can is pretty much the same from place to place.  So is water.  So fill up a half dozen cans, line them up in a row, and try to hit them dead center and level.  Will test the same way using pellets as close to yours as i can (plus a chronograph) and let you know the estimated energy.

May be paranoid, but would your local shop cause you some problems if your rifle did test over the legal limit?  Would they just say "Oh...yes...it's 13.5 foot pounds and you don't have the paperwork to own one of these, but we're going to let you take it home with you anyway."

Thanks for the info' and assistance You are very kind.
My local shop is not very friendly. It's more of a shotgun place and can sometimes show disdain to an air gun shooter like myself. I can't imagine they'd hand it back to me without some sort of argument and extra money wanted from me.

Alan try taking a couple of phone books and taping them together. Then shoot both rifles into them with the same pellet and a full co2 charge and see which page both pellets penetrate to. Not really accurate in any sense to tell you how fast it's really shooting, but should tell you if your AR2078 is shooting faster than your modded(legal?) QB78.

I tried that last night and I got interesting results. The AR2078 penetrates a few pages more BUT when I remove the moderator/MuzzleBrake from the QB78 it gives more penetration than the AR'  :0
I did not realise that the MuzzleBrake would do that. Hmm. I will post a seperate question on that.

Simple job.  Find a local Airgun Club and email them for you to attend as a guest.  Before you shoot you will have to chrono your gun for insurance and legal purposes.  It takes about two minutes and the dealer who wanted £40 wants a kick in the nuts for damned poor service! You will also get a good days shooting and make some new friends.  By the way you can buy a Combro Chrono direct from the makers for £39.95 inc delivery and a superb piece of kit they are too. Save up for one because any CO2 gun has a disparity in it's Winter and Summer power due to the very nature of CO2.  Better safe than sorry mate and everyone with an airgun should have one.  To give you an idea of power, my gun shoots at 11.4 ft/lbs at room temp (21 degC) and shooting at a metal plate at 6 metres the .22 pellet (Wasp & Air Arms Field Diablolo)) is completely and utterly flattened and the skirt has broken off in places and sometimes all the way round.  If your pellets are just compressed or distorted at that distance it is well on the legal side.  You can always get onto one of the bigger UK forums like AirgunBBS and see if any lads or lasses local to you will help you out.  I'd be very surprised if they didn't.  I would but I presume you're in London and I'm a Manchester lad myself.

I am indeed in the Smoke. I will join a club in Kent in the spring. Meanwhile I managed to get it chrono'd by a shop in Es*_*_*_*_*_*. He is a star and now I know what the AR2078 is doing  :emoticon:
