We could use some new additional material for the "Library"
« on: August 20, 2006, 07:36:55 AM »
Lets share some ideas. I was thinking along the lines of a reactive pellet target and also perhaps a target pellet trap. They should be with a dimensional drawing of sorts that the guys can relate to and build as a fun, part of the hobby project. It wouldn't hurt to have a few of each so they could have a choice that both fits their needs as well as their ability and cost. Any other project suggestions would be great too.

I built one a few months back, works good,...if I hit it:)  I like to set my plastic army men up on the edge of it and blast them away...side effect if I catch the plywood that I made the trap out of it tends to delaminate:(

Mine is basically a 12"x10"x5" box made of 3/4" plywood.  I screwed some of those big black paperclips to it top and bottom to hold targets printed on 8 1/2" x11" paper.  The back of the box is filled with about 10 lbs. of duct seal that I bought at Home Depot.  Stops the pellets from my B30 .22 and stops/retains the BB's my kids shoot from their Red Ryders.  Duct Seal is about the only thing I've found that wont allow BB's to ricochet, yet still stops high speed lead pellets.  I'll try to draw something up to add to this as a visual aid, but I think it's pretty straight forward.  My next trap I plan to put the Duct Seal at the bottom and use a heavy steel plate at an angle in the back to reflect the pellets down into the Duct Seal...will let you know how it turns out!

Oh yea, forgot to mention, shooting at frozen paintballs is a blast also!

I have been thinking of a pellet trap also. My metal pellet trap I bought back when I first got my Hunter 1250 .22 only lasted a month. It gots vent holes in it now...:)  I want to build one as you mentioned with a piece of spring steel plating in the rear at an angle. Just got to find a piece of spring steel plate I can use.

I should of put plumbers putty in the back of my old pellet trap but found out about it too late...:(

Hey Dan, I look at those paintballs every time I go to Wally World and think about you and those frozen paint balls you use for targets. It sounds neat but does it make a mess and can the exploded paint balls be washed off with water?  Also when it is hot out, how long does it take them to melt down?

Also how high up off the ground do you place your army men and paintballs for target practice?  ...:)

If you answer this tonight, I may go to Wally World and pic up some paint balls tomorrow... hehe.

How about this Pellet Trap..

Here is a link to an interesting pellet trap. Here is the scoop on it. Credit goes to Pellet Trap dot com.

Magnetic Pellet Trap
Catch your pellets in style with our heavy gauge steel constructed pellet trap!
Our pellet trap is made of heavy gauge steel so once the pellet enters the trap, it stays put.
It is magnetic so when a sillouette is hit it will stay down. After all the buffalo are hit, simply shoot the circular sillouette in the center and all the buffalo pop back up begging for more!

Here is one that i made off scrap wood 2"x10" about 2 years ago and it is still in good shape.
Inside the back on top, i got a wire to hang old pieces of clothing and in front of that i put paper or cardbord.
And in the front i got a steel rail to put my victims on.

Paintballs are wash offable.  I place my pellet trap on my retaining wall which is made of that concrete stackable brick and when the sprinklers in my yard go on, the paint goes away.  The paintball shells however I usually pick up by hand, I don't think they break down in the elements, I could be wrong on this.  It's been about 101-106F here the last weeks or so, so I haven't been killing many frozen paintballs(too hot on the back porch), but I suspect they don't last long in this sort of heat.  I think I mentioned in a previous post how I stab them with a toothpic prior to freezing so I can prop them up in a piece of styrofoam, I think the hole is so small and tight around the toothpics that they don't leak much and wont just fall off.  The frozen part just makes them come apart more when they're hit, when my son hits the non-frozen ones with his Red Ryder they go through sometimes without a wimper.

I usually shoot with my trap right at ground level more or less, I have close by neighbors and can't really be shooting over the fence.  behind my back fence however is a drainage canal, so if I shoot at a slight slope and something goes past the trap they are at least heading toward the canal.  So far no unhappy neighbors and they all know I shoot back there.

We have some scrap galvanized steel at work I've been eyeballing, think I might use that as a deflector plate.  Friend of mine also offered up an old car, yes an actual autmobile.  He said I could come out with my sawsall and lop a chunk out of the door or hood to use as a deflector...we'll see:)

I have a Beeman knockoff pellet trap, scaled up yo 12 x 16. It has just been repainted, so usage is not evident

It's made of plywood cladded with 2 sheets of 16 guage steel. 16 was chosen because it was easier to work.

The steel is glued to the plywood with a thin film of Liquid Nails, and the second sheet is glued to the first. I have a few strategic screwsand clampsto hold things in place as the cement dries, and give additional strength against moving from the shock. The wood backing keeps the impact noise quite low, and much lower in tone.

The hanging rod is 1/2"[probably overkill, but it was what I had] with washers held in place by 1/2"pipe slipped over the rod. These stop the targets from dancing all over the place. The targets are standard Beeman attached with hangers of 12 guage wire.

If I were to do it again, I would get the cut steel versions, as an S1k or a SSup blows the cast ones apart in short order
