Funny thought....
« on: August 22, 2006, 02:50:40 PM »
Today at work I was given the challenge of installing some special high pressure gas cylinders into one of our products.  These high pressure cylinders are of the type you might find in an airbag system, complete with a firing mechanism.  These things are about a foot long maybe 2" in diameter and my engineer tells me have a wall thickness of around 4mm.  So I get to looking at these things, then read the label....says something like:"Danger, high pressure gas!".  So me being me I look at it a little closer and I read "600Bar".  Holy mackeral!  So I come to find out that they aren't actually charged to 600bar, but they are tested at that....but they DO come charged at about 6500psi!!!   This is where my mind starts racing...  If one of these things got into my car and went home with me, and I somehow attached a barrel to it...say a 5 foot 1.0 caliber smoothbore..  I think you all can see where this is heading.  In all actuallity, my kids need a father, I like my fingers, toes, limbs of all sorts, not to mention living at home and not in prison for exploding the neighborhood.  Plus, ya know my job is a good thing that pays for my airguns and kids and wife.  But man....6500psi!!!!!!!  Whoah, bet you'd have a tough time finding a silencer for that thing!  Anyone else notice stuff around work or at home that looks "inviting"?

Still haven't built a decent gasoline+tennisball cannon...maybe another lifetime...but, 6500psi!!!!!!

6500psi!!!!!!!!!!

yeeeeehaaawww!!!!

Probably best that work kicks me out everyday after 8 hours or we might have problems.....

Sounds terribly familiar Dano. I've built compressed air powered nail guns during slow moments at work. They were capable of shooting a standard deck nail across the shop (approx. 30 or so feet) and sticking into sheetrock. I've also made ball bearing and lincoln log cannons in the past. Lincoln logs going through stop signs is pretty cool. Not that I would know of course, simply a guess.

Oh no, these come pre-compressed.  Just add electricity and a small squib fires and lets out all of the air at once.  There is no pumping involved here, besides they are filled with inert gas, no pumping allowed.

DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
« Reply #6 on: August 23, 2006, 03:13:26 PM »
I will not be held accountable if you hurt yourself, or anyone around you, or any property here or on the Moon.  This post was NOT meant to seed anyone with thoughts of firing anything powered by airbag air cylinders.  If you try this and lose a finger, toe, head, arm, or anything or any other persons, pets, barnyard animals or whatever happens, it is YOUR fault!!!!  I take no responsibility!!!! Besides, I said "SIMILAR to what opens a cars airbag", what I work with has nothing to do with cars.  High pressure air canisters like the ones I work with are fired electronically with a squib, small amounts of stray electric current could set them off...I'm guessing car airbags are similar.  Safest bet is to NOT handle them at all, and if you do it is at YOUR own risk!!!!  My guess is that you're better off playing tag on the freeway at rush hour.  What do they say on Mythbusters???  "I AM A TRAINED PROFESSIONAL!"

Oh yea, and that thing about gasoline and tennis balls, better forget I said that too:)
