Set Up My Discovery .22 Today
« on: March 18, 2008, 01:23:48 PM »

Well, spent the morning setting up my new .22 Discovery.  Took her out of the box, unwrapped her gently and spent some time cleaning her up.  The stock is nice, no dents or scratches and I really like the grain and color of the stain. The bluing is pretty good, not the best I've ever seen but pretty good.  I did have a couple of tiny fine lined scratches on the air tube right near where the barrel band is attached,,,, it appears as though they happened when the barrel band was installed.  But to be honest they are very tiny and they don't really bother me,,, especially since I bought the rifle to take in the woods hunting and she's gonna no doubt get a scratch or 2 eventually anyway.  Other than that the rifle is in great shape.  I'm very happy with the QC.  After that was done I put the pump together.  I got the 3x9x32 AO Leapers scope off the shelf that I had saved for her, but I figured I'd better charge her up to 2000 psi and make sure all was okay before installing the scope. I had pumped up the rifle at Cobra Airguns yesterday so I knew the process, but all did not go as planned.

It took exactly 100 pumps to get to 2000 psi and it really wasn't bad at all.  I was worried that the herniated discs in my back would object to the task, but it didn't bother my back at all.  I slowly opened the bleeder valve as instructed to let out the residual pressure in the pump hose and instead of the residual pressure in the hose bleeding off all 2000 psi in the gun bled of too !!  :(

I stood there in amazement, and not too happy, but I figured I must've done something wrong so I hooked up the pump again and pumped the rifle up to 2000 psi a second time.   When I was done I again slowly opened the bleeder valve and again all 2000 psi bled out of the rifle.  I re-read every page of the instructions and tried the procedure a 3rd time,,,,, and had the same results.  Now I was really unhappy !!  :(

I made myself calm down and called the Crosman service # listed in the owners manual.  I was pleasantly greeted by a very nice woman named Angel,,,, yup, that was her name and she turned out to be just that !!  :)

She went through the problem with me, then asked me if I minded being put on "hold" for a few minutes while she conferred with a service technician.  I told her no problem.  In about 2 minutes she came back on the line and told me that the service technicians had heard of a few customers having the same problem I was having, although they said they hadn't been able to re-create the problem during their ongoing research.  The good news was that they said that they had found out that instead of opening the bleeder valve slowly, like the instructions say to, they recommended opening the valve quickly all the way and that should correct the problem.  Sure enough, they were right.  I tried it their way 2 or 3 times, opening the bleeder valve quickly and all the way, and it worked perfectly.  I was VERY impressed not only with their quick solution to my problem, but also with the professional, polite way I was treated.

Now that I knew the rifle, and pump, were working I went ahead and mounted the scope.  Everything went well, scope went on with no problems and I was very satisfied with the overall feel of the rifle with the scope mounted.  The rifle is very light and the added weight of the mount and the scope just made the rifle feel better to me.  The only thing left to do was sight her in, so I decided to take a ride to the duck farm to do that since the rifle is just a tad bit loud for repeated shooting in my back yard.  My neighbors don't mind that I shoot, but the rifle is louder than my springers and I'm not looking to annoy such nice neighbors, so off to the duck farm I went.

Conditions at the farm were far from optimal for sighting in.  There was a really stiff wind howling through the farm and it was rather cold, but I set about doing the best I could.  I started at 10 yards, with a target pinned on a dead pine tree, and quickly got the rifle on paper using CPL's. I backed off to 25 yards and started shooting for bullseye, making scope corrections as I went.  Didn't take long until I had the rifle shooting pretty decent groups but I could tell the wind and the cold were effecting my shooting.  I brought only 2 types of pellets with me, CPL's and CPH's, so I thought I'd try the CPH's.  I immediately saw the groups tighten up on the target,,,, seems the rifle really likes the CPH's.  Ok with me,,,, I have tons of em and I like them for hunting.  :)  I did the best I could sighting her in for the CPH's considering the wind and cold, but I got to the point where I was satisfied that it was as good as it was gonna get today so I screwed the caps on the scope turrets and headed off to find a critter to to shoot at.

Well, I roamed the duck farm for an hour and 1/2 but simply could not find any pests to shoot at, so I settled for a couple of old soda cans.  At distances from 10 yards to 30 yards I was killing soda cans like they were going out of style.  I finally gave in to the cold and headed home.  I'm looking forward to a nice calm, windless and warm day so I can take my time and sight in the rifle proper,,,, but I'm very pleased with the rifles performance during todays short field shooting session. I still have more shooting and testing to do of course, but so far I think this rifle is going to be just perfect for what I bought her for,,,, small game hunting. On my next sighting in session I'll set up the chronograph and see what kind of numbers she gives.

I took a bunch of pics of the rifle before I went to the duck farm.  She looks so pretty with her new scope  :)

Looking good.

I too almost had the same air dump situation you had.

I realized what was happening by watching the gauges and decided to open the valve further and quicker, all is well.

Great review Jeff,

Great photos, and a pretty lady there !

Now tell us all tomorrow how your back feels, I can't believe you had to pump her up so many times, It would have killed me ! I think I'll stay with the springers, for the time being. :-)

Just too old for all that pumpin.

Hi Bill,

The 1st time wasn't bad at all,,,, the 2nd time was still ok,,, but the 3rd time (since it was all in a row) did make me breath a bit harder :)

Not bad now though,,,, what I was doing today at the duck farm was filling her up to 2000,,,, shooting until she got down to around 1000, then I'd pump her back up to full again. Pumping her up after she's 1/2 charged, or even 1/4 charged, is pretty easy. :)

Sure is a sweet looking shooter. I see dead critters in your future. Can the Duck Farm produce enough critters? Jeff, How is the trigger on your new girl? She is one of the two guns I'm looking at. The R9 Double Gold or Goldfinger in .22 is the other one.

Hi Bill,
If the pumping affects your back then can a scuba tank (more money to spend of course...). Then knock the tank over and let it hit your foot like I did last week :(
I am the Homer Simpson of airguns hehe.

Nice work Jeff. The wood work looks lovely and the bolt is really cool. What's the weight compared to a scoped QB78?
The Discovery is going to be sold here in the UK later this year but no news of a price yet. If it is not too expensive I will get one. Thanks for the photos.
regards,
Alan

Very nice Jeff. Nice set up on your sweety..:) Although I only own one PCP "FX Cyclone .22" it is a great hunting air rifle because of it's weight. I know you handle the heavy stuff very well and I am sure you will be surprised at how far out you will be able to reach to tag those critters at the duck farm. When Ed finally gets back here, he is going to s#$t him self when he finds out you made the transition..:) And sure he will be looking real close at your take on hunting with your new baby..:)

Hope she does well for you Jeff. Enjoy and be happy..:)

Thanks guys,,,,,

As for the weight compared to the QB-78,,, I haven't actually held either of my 78's for quite some time (stupid cold winter weather) but if memory serves me I would say they are pretty close in weight.  As for the trigger,,,,,, it is a bit "stiff" but it's not really to bad.  I'm hoping it will smooth out a bit with use.  I found that if I practice good trigger control I get nice tight groups,,,, if I get lax with the trigger then I start to get flyers.  The more I shot the gun the more used to the trigger I got and once I got the "feel" it was ok, but it would be nice if it smooths itself out with use.  I read about some of the trigger "tweaks" but I'm not really ready to open the gun up yet so I'm just gonna leave it the way it is and see what happens.

I wanted to shoot it some more today but it's cold and rainy out so that's the end of that idea.  Have to return to work this afternoon so no shooting for me for the next few days  :(

First day off though I'm headed back to the duck farm with the Disco to bag me a PCP critter  :)

Jeff,
That is a really nice looking gun. I wish I had the b___s to spent the dough on a looker like that.
I am saving up the funds as of today cause that rifle just has me captivated, and your review sure makes me want one,
despite the little glitch you mentioned with the bleeder valve.
How do you like the scope? I have the same scope just waiting for mounting hardware to put on my B40.

Where did you order the rifle from?

Great pics and nice looking shooter Jeff have a blast with it...

Re: Set Up My Discovery .22 Today Finally ! nice weather

Great review Jeff.
Have you had any quality time with her now that there's a bit better weather?
Less wind and 45+ degrees here in MA yesterday.
I got the chance to spend a few hours with the Benny yesterday and at 30+ yards I'm extremely happy >30 ecstatic!. Free hand sitting I was getting two inch groups @ 30+ yds. which for me is good on as windy a day as yesterday was here in MA.
I got better as the day went on but I can say the gun is more consistent than I am. The BSA 8-30x40 helped a lot.
I need less coffee and more technique!
All my pellets crossed the Chrony in the 800's. Low 800's for the 16+g's and high 800's for the sub 14 g pellets anything between 14 & 16 was of course in the mid 800 fps. Zero complaints there.
I have polished the trigger and it's far from great but noticeably better. (worth it)
Ended up plinking with it and I can shoot anything at any range thats bigger than an inch.
More fun than it has a right to be. :D
So tell us have you spent a whole day with her yet?

Hey Dan,

Nah, I haven't had a chance to spend a lot of time with her,,,, stupid job of mine :(

Today is my last work day then I'm off for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. I'm lookin forward spending some time at the duck farm doing some more target shooting (final site in) and hopefully some G-hog hunting :)

Everyday before work though I do open up the gun safe, take her out, say hello and then rub her down gently with a silicone gun cloth. Then I put her gently back in her spot and secure her for the day. :)

So, hopefully I'll be posting some chrony results and some target pics soon. :)

Short Disco Shooting Session
« Reply #13 on: March 24, 2008, 09:38:59 AM »

Well, I had planned on spending the afternoon, or at least a good part of it, shooting my Discovery .22 , doing pellet grouping test, chrony tests and of course final scope sight it,,, but of of course my stupid job calls me for overtime and my wife tells me I have to go to work. I know she's right,,, we certainly could use the money, but to say I was crushed would be an understatement !!

The only good thing was that I had one hour before I needed to start getting ready for work so I grabbed the Disco and headed out to the backyard range. Now the gun is a little to loud for a long session in my yard, but I figured I could get away with 30 or 40 shots without ticking off the neighbors. Besides, I had just filled the gun up to 2000 psi and wanted to see how many good shots I got out of it before it required pumping up again. I did all my shooting kneeling down behind a lawn chair, using the chair as a rest. I really wanted to get out the shooting bench but I just didn't have time.

I started out shooting CPL's and with the first look through the scope I knew I wasn't go to get any spectacular groups cause I could see the crosshairs wobbling all over the place. My back and legs have been bothering me for the past 2 days so I was having a hard time staying "steady" while I was kneeling behind the chair,,, but I was gonna give it my best shot. (no pun intended).

Anyway, I shot the first 2 groups with the CPL's and wound up getting good groups, not super but good. I switched over the JSB Exact Express pellets and after the first 2 shots knew the rifle really liked em. Both pellets were almost touching each other. I finished shooting using the Exact Express pellets and was impressed with the groups I was getting. If I had been sitting at my shooting bench, nice and steady, the groups would've been much better, but I was happy with what I was getting just kneeling....

When I stopped shooting I had shot 28 good, powerful, consistent shots and the meter was now reading 1000 psi. I would've liked to have taken some more shots but I didn't want to press my luck with the noise level so I called it quits. But,,, I was very happy with the number ofshots I got,,, and I think I had a few more"good shots" left in the reservoir....

The rifle continues to show me it's got potential for excellent accuracy,,, I just have to do my part.I found thatbesides my "wobbling" effectingmy accuracy the stiff trigger also had an effect. The triggerisn't terrible, I just have to practice really good trigger control toavoid flyers andthe groups opening up. I wasshooting better as I got the "feel" for the trigger, but it's still stiffer than I would prefer. I"m guessing it will smooth out with use, or I guess I could do some work on it,,, right now I'll just leave it the way it is until I get the courage to start messing the with trigger.....

The gun definitely likes the JSB EXact express pellets,,, I'm looking forward to doing a pellet grouping test using all my available .22 caliber pellets so I can find the "perfect" pellet in my arsenal for the gun. I'm hoping I can do this tomorrow... If I do I'll post the results.......
