Went on a barnyard hunt today., killing rats..more to follow
« on: April 10, 2008, 12:57:27 PM »

Got permission to cull the RAT population only at a nature center.

This kind of thing is new to me right now, I never did anything like this before.

It seems the rats are numbered in the 100's or 1000's and they like going after the feed that is put out.

I got some pictures of a chicken hawk, peacock, a very large turkey and some other animals which I will post later.

I will upload pics of the farm/nature center tomorrow after I've rested a bit, It's been a long day and I'm sunburned.

Managed to get 5 rats total, which I don't think is many, I think it may have been a bad idea to try flushing the rats out of their holes with the water hose.

My strategy would have been to wait for them to get comfortable in numbers going to the feed, but that wasn't my choice to make.

I even advised against the person running the place as to using poisons on the rats, but again not my choice. The pest control guy may be coming next week.

So does anybody have some good tips for successful rat sniping?

Just a thought. I have seen video on guys killing rats and it seems they go at night and use flashlights mounted on there scopes or someone to hold the light. All those shining eyes looking back at you are wonderful targets...:)

I was gonna say just what Gene did,,,,,, from some of the rat hunting posts I've seen it seems night time is the time to go....

Although I went to the duck farm a couple of times at night looking for rats and didn't do well at all. The duck farm owner told me the other day that the rats are there,,, guess I just have to do so more "recon" and find the right spots......

Hmmm...unfortunately nightime is not gonna work out at this place, right now anyway.

Although I was thinking the same thing you both said so far, because thats what I've seen as well.

It borders a town park and the flood lights aren't working right now.

At this location I have to be mindful of visitors and school field trips during the day, But they are closed on Sunday and Monday.

Maybe daybreak would be  a better option?
Thats pretty early to get up for though, rats?

Hey buddy what I do is I get a bag of dog food and peanut butter I like the big balls of dog food and i take them and mix them up then I take a shopping bag and pour the mix in 2 plastic shopping bags ( so you can see rats that go inside then I set the bags 20yds to the left and 20yds to the right take some of the pellets and spread them around the bag. Now this is important don't shoot the first couple of rats unless they sit there and eat because these guys will take the bait back home and come right back with more because they will have the peanut butter on them, then you can start shooting away, I shoot from a second floor porch. To date I have 773 rats and that is only about 2 1/2 - 3 months. You can also move the bags out futher to what ever yards you have your scope sited to. Hope this helps.

I think Mike Millz has it just right. The rats seem to love Peanut Butter. They can't get enough of that stuff. Farmer told me that when they go hunting rats, they smear Peanut Butter on a low hanging wire(Just high enough so that the rats get on their backlegs to reach), when they stretch in this way they make nice large targets to take out. Must be done at night though with red filtered light, or low power light, lighting the general "trap" area,so you can see them through the scope.

Hope this trick works. Post the mountains of rats that you shoot, so we can see if it works.!!

I think if you put it in the right spots that you will get the rats to come out during the day, I have taken some rats in daylight with out even bating. also 30-06 that is an awesome idea, I am going to set a rig up like that and shoot some rat belly....lol

Mike let me know if the idea works, and post some pics please. You must have tons of rats if they even come out in daylight.
