New to PCP's - got my Discovery
« on: April 28, 2008, 09:08:38 AM »
Hello all - I am becoming re-addicted to airguns after about a 20 year layoff and have a couple of pumpers and just sold  my Diana 48 (just didn't like the recoil and weight scoped). So decided to try the Discovery from Pyramid Air in 177 in early March.

Received her last Thursday and when I opened the box the stock was split almost in 2 starting at the trigger guard. Pyramid was willing to have me return freight free for a replacement but after waiting almost two months, I just couldn't bear to do that. Called Crosman and they have a new stock in the mail for me. Meanwhile I just had to wood glue the old one enough to shoot the thing.

The barrel crown looked nearly perfect but still had to remove a tiny burr from it before it would group decently even at 10 yards in my basement where I do most of my shooting. While I had it apart I added Art's power adjuster just because I had it. Using the open sights that it came with I can now (usually) get 1/2" groups even with my bad eyes so it seems to be a good shooter.

This is my first PCP but I think I still have a bit of a problem? It takes 60-70 full pumps to bring it back from 1500 to 2000 psi. It takes 8-10 full pumps after hooking it up just to get it to read 1500 on the pump gauge. Pump gauge and gun gauge read the same.
Funny thing is it sounds like the valve is squeaking on each pump but once filled it holds air fine ( no loss over weekend). Crosman said it shouldn't take more that about 20-30 good pumps to bring it back 500 psi and will take it back and repair or replace at no charge but I hate to send it back if it is something simple.

Any ideas?

Thanks

60 to 70 sounds like way too many pumps, something is wrong. Mine takes 40 or so from 1000 to 2000psi. The squeak is normal I think, mine does it too. I've heard that Crosman returns the gun better than new when they work on a returned Disco. It should be worth the wait. It's a terrific gun when all is as it should be, light, accurate and powerful.

I am sorry to here about the stock it sounds like freight damage but its good you are being taken care of. I have a Discovery .177 and like it and have several post on thr Discovery site here at GTA. About the pumping are you taking slow full pump strokes or are there some fast ones involved that might not let the pump draw in a full charge of air on each pump I know some times I can get in a hurry and it takes more pumps to fill . From about 1100 - 2000 mine will take about 35 -40 pumps . It takes about 5 or so to charge the hose to gun pressure. Are you sure you are tightening the air release valve tight as well. Good luck Marvin

40 or so sounds about right. I'm guessing something is wrong with the pump. Shot it down to 1000 and it too 85 full slow pumps to bring it up to 2000. Thanks

Thanks Marvin. Sounds like I may have a weak or leaking pump. Yup, I am taking it slow and easy, helped a couple people move over the weekend and my arms are still sore so I have to go slow and steady. Release valve is nice and tight each time. When I pump I pull handle up until it hits the top stop and push it down until it hits the bottom. Took 14 pumps to charge the hose to the 1000 that the gun gauge read after shooting last night. The last inch or so of pump stroke is all that feels like it is actually putting any pressure in. Guess I'll probably send it back after the stock comes in and I put it on. No sense shipping that back separately as well. Regards, Tom

Sorry to hear that it was not as smooth going as you would like but it sounds like your not letting it get to you. Better luck from this point on .Marvin

Thanks Marvin

I'm sure once it is checked over by Crosman it will be fine, just disappointed I will be without it for the while. It is a fun gun to shoot. Still got pumpers to play with.
