average accuracy
« on: May 24, 2008, 04:58:24 PM »
I was wondering what the average accuracy would be for a Gamo 440 in .177.  I group within an inch most times at 30mtrs (shooting from a rest) with Beeman FTS.  I have installed a GRT -III trigger and done my best attempt at a home tune, replaced the spring (Maccari spring and seal) and applied heavy tar (thanks to Charlie for answering all my pestering questioning emails). It has taken the vibration out of everything and it is a lot quieter I am very happy with its accuracy but was wondering if it was realistic to improve it further.

Have you tried any other pellets???  Whenever I get a new rifle I usually do grouping tests with every pellet type I have then I'll sight the rifle in for the best performing pellet.  Also,,,, the more you shoot the rifle the more you'll get used to it and hence accuracy normally improves.   You can also try different "holds" while shooting the rifle and see if there's any improvement in accuracy, although it sounds like you're already doing OK with that shooter  :)

Oh, BTW,,,, I forgot to welcome you to GTA :)

You're gonna love it here,,,, lotsa nice folks.

Will be looking forward to your future posts......  :)

Like Jeff said, try different holds and pellets. What you didn't tell us was how you are sighting the gun. Opens or scoped. If scoped, is it an adjustable objective scope or not? If not, you could be seeing parallax error, opening your groups up a bit. If you're shooting opens that ain't half bad!

WELCOME to the GTA Forums Rob,

This IS A GREAT PLACE TO BE !!! AIRGUN HEAVEN !!!

It sounds like you received some great advice, and that 440 Gamo is known to be a fine shooter ! You might try a consistent hold at the same points on your rifle, about an inch or two tn front of the trigger guard has worked well for others here, also watch the down force on the stock from your cheek.

Let us know how your doing ! And don't be a stranger here !

I believe Jeff HIT THE NAIL...Pellets!  My Gamo will shot one pellet CP Wads in a Clover
But If I put in some CP Destroyers they hit Exactly
One inch to the Right...I Thought I was going Crazy!
Definitely  try out several...Then Keep the same hold!

                                                           Best of luck!
                                                           Steve

Hello again and thanks to all for answering my question.  Sorry for not getting back to you all sooner, I had to do a trip away.  I use a scope (just a tasco AG 4 x 32 AO).  I have tried Crow Mag, FTS, Gamo Pro Mag and H&N Finale Match.  The FTS and Finale Match are the best so far.  I will try the hold in front of the trigger guard and see how that goes.  Where I live, Airguns are just not a common thing and any advise I can get is from the net.  Even the gun shop in the nearest town (300 klm away) told me their gunsmith does not like working on airguns and it would be cheaper for me to by a new Gamo.
Thanks for all the warm welcomes and now I am happy I have lots of people to bother with my questions.
P.S I would like to get another scope.  Any suggestions on a quality scope?

Hey Rob,

I have a Gamo 890, and it loves JSB Exacts: http://www.pyramydair.com/p/rws-94-diana-air-rifle.shtml, Crosman Premiers lite: http://www.pyramydair.com/cgi-bin/pellet.pl?pellet_id=118, and Benjamin Diablo's: http://www.pyramydair.com/cgi-bin/pellet.pl?pellet_id=160. Other dealers have these also, and perhaps at a better price ?

As for need of a gunsmith, we have two very capable Air Gunsmiths here !

And as for the scope, let us know how much you would like to spend !

Hello Bill,
I live right up the top end of Australia in the Northern Territory.  I have found that it is actually quicker for me to order stuff from the USA in most cases than from southern states in my own country.  I will order some of those pellets you mentioned and let you know how it goes.  I would like to spend about $250 US on a scope.  Do the Gunsmiths work on guns from overseas?

Well Rob,

We have Air Gunsmiths like CharlieDaTuna here on our Forum. He is the MAN to go to for Gamo's and some other airguns he works on. There are other Air Gunsmiths in the U.S. and many people that repair airguns !

I have a BushnellTrophy 4X12X40 AO on my Beeman R-9, and a BSA Gamo 4X12X44 AOon my 890 Gamo, and a Bushnell Sportsman 4X12X40 AO on my HW-30, all three are very good scopes for airguns. below is a chart of how well a scope holds up to airgungs, spring airguns (springers), can destroy even expensive scopes due to the push pull action of them.

Fell free to ask as many questions that you need to, but I may not be answering, as I don't know everything.. :0 Someone will though, we have a bunch of real smart fellows here !

Hey Thanks Bill,

I looked on the Pyramid Air site and never knew there were so many pellets to try.  I am going to order some JSB Exact but am not sure which one as they come in 3 weights in .177.  10.2g I am thinking will be too heavy so that leaves 7.6g and 8.4g any advice? i also was wondering if anyone out there has put in a gas ram into a 440 or even if it can be done.

The JSB Exacts 8.4 gr. seem to work real well for me and many of the other members here..http://www.pyramydair.com/cgi-bin/pellet.pl?pellet_id=261.

The pellets I mentioned in a previous post to you are the ones that I have had the most accuracy with.

As for the Pyramid Ram Air conversion, the velocities have been around 100 fps slower than the spring models. They are harder to cock, have a sharper faster recoil than a springer !
