Priceless! Stuck update
« on: June 03, 2008, 06:11:13 AM »

3 12 inc brass rods, euro pliers, assorted dowel rods, 36 inch brass rod,

euro pliers, shrink tubing, blow gun kit--30.57 plus tax--I always do overkill on project supplies

Removing the plug in the CFX--good

Not becoming an air gun fatality _PRICELESS!!!

My biggest concern was safety for me. I have read enough to know that accidents can and do happen. I learned a lot and I am certainly more comfortable doing jobs on the gun and guns in general.  I can't say that I would recommend cleaning a barrel this way but boy was that plug dirty with a smell which I can't place. I don't think there was significant spring damage judging by the noise level.    It does sound a little different but my noise meter still says about the same.  The tone seems different to me. Certainly no smoke like on Saturday--I had a visible cloud inside after a huge sonic crack in the garage. Whatever was in there really showed up when the temperature got much warmer. It was this crack that prompted the patch pulling which turned into a mess.  I never chronied the gun when I got it so if I get around to it I can compare it  to the velocity after the tune.  I don't know how many shots went through it after the tune but I have only put 40 to 50 through it.

Needless to say I had no success with compressed air after I trussed it up with duct tape to keep the lever open and not moving around  and pipe insulation behind the trigger--there are no guarantees about possible accidental discharge in my opinion. I would not recommend anyone just try this without the utmost safety considered. Be careful and I repeat i think and most will agree  this can be dangerous. I held it upright with the bench vise after wrapping the barrel and pointed the breech away from me.  Found my shooting safety glasses and since I don't see real well with out my glasses used my hat magnifier. I did not lube anything. The compressed air did not budge anything.  One piece of the dreaded skewer was about half inch below the  barrel crown although it appears to be flat and not crowned like an exposed barrel. The plug was about four inches above the breech.  I took 1/8 12 inch brass rod and shrink wrapped the 1/8 tubing around it with a heat gun and left some on the end so it would wrap around. Used a maple  2by2  for a  hammer.  Took quite a bit of force to move it.  After half inch or so-i pulled out the brass rod which came out easily.  sure did not want to replace rag and bamboo plug with a brass plug.  As i ran out of rod length I switched to the three foot rod.  Cleaned up where it was sheared with diamond hone and some 1500 grit paper.  Did the same shrink wrap and left a little more cushion this time.  A couple of smacks later the plug blew out and hit the dryer which later on took 15 minutes to find.  Looks like wife beater t shirt material might make a good hard projectile.   The splintered skewers (there were two pieces)  nicely came out like sausage out of  stuffer.  With no damage to the shrink wrap on the rod I figured the barrel was Ok and not any worse for wear.  Blew out with compressed air.  Untrussed the lever etc and put in a pellet which came out the correct end after firing. I fully expected to hear something evil The gun seemed  quieter without the muzzle brake--does this make sense to anyone.  I am starting to feel like Clark Griswold again.  Thanks to all who replied with ideas.  BTW I have gone around sniffing some pellet tins but cannot identify  the dirty patch smell--closest was RWS superdomes.   I ran some more patches through it.  It will not pass the military white glove test but by comparison it is white glove clean.  Live, Learn and don't make the same mistakes again.

I hope I can get to like this gun.

I had a lot of help with suggestions from the members. Now I have tools on hand that hopefully I won't need for a while.

John:
I didn't know the skewer was between the "plug" and the muzzle. Had the impression from your initial post it was stuck from the breech end.
Glad the problem is solved.

I did not give a very good explanation of what exactly happened. I was a little panicky initially and just wanted some feedback. Thanks
