More groundhog action!
« on: June 29, 2008, 10:26:44 AM »
It's about 4:30pm and I 'm getting ready to go to Walmart to pick up some CO2 cartridges for my new custom 2240 when I happened to look out the bedroom window out of habit and spot a g-hog near my shed.  I observe him for a little while.  This is one didn't seem interested in eating but was scoping out my shed to start a new burrow or nest!  I 'm not sure why but there are 4 g-hog holes under that shed, 2 on each side.  Dozens of g-hogs have moved in just fine over the years and did not create new ones.  Then I realize this is a younger g-hog, not too big but not small either.  I 'd call him medium size but still young.  He kept walking along the perimeter of the shed just a couple of inches from it and sticking his head under the wood.  I decided to take him out before he starts digging.

I grabbed the Diana 36 and loaded a CPHP 7.9gr.  I slowly open the window and after a couple of minutes of "stop & go + freeze" I managed to get it up 3/4 of the way without spooking him.  Now he 's concentrating his attention under the shed door and has been there for a good 2-3 minutes.  I can only see his behind but finally he turns sideways to the right to scan the area of danger.  I 'm now able to put the Legend's croshairs behind his eye.  He puts his head down for a few secs to much a little, still inches from the front of the shed by the door about 18.5-19yds out (the back of the shed is 21.5-22yds).  Head back up again and scans.  Perfect opportunity.  I reaquire the "sweet spot" and squeeze the trigger.  He goes right down and starts quivering with his tail up in the air.  He 's down for the count and seems motionless now.  A few secs go by and as soon as I 'm done reloading a Superdome 8.3gr that I randomely grabbed out of the Crosman pouch on my belt, he comes to life and with whatever energy he has left, starts rolling over slowly towards my driveway, over and over!  I set my crosshairs on him again and as soon as he reaches the driveway he stops for a moment because I had the driveway recently done and is about 2" taller than the ground.  I think that stopped his momentum.  I aim quickly at his eye and shoot again.  On impact his head goes back to the left and out of sight.  He 's done.  I try to reload just in case and drop the pellet.  I try to control my breathing and relax and reach for another pellet while the adrenalin is rushing through me.  Reloading successful! :)  Take another peak through the scope and there 's no sign of life in the g-hog.  I pick up the camera that was a few feet away from me and snap a pic from the window.  Why? I don't know, but I guess it gives you an idea of the shed and the door he was investigating to start another burrow.  It seems he wanted an escape route in every side of the shed and was not happy with the 2 on either side.
Upon closer examination I disocerved the first pellet had hit its target well but slightly above the eye and to the left a little.  That's the perimeter of the eye.  A hard bone that protects the eye and protrudes out (you can actually see the arch of the bone above the eye in the pic).  There was no exit wound!  The downards angle shooting from above also made the pellet travel down a little so it probably did not travel through enough brain to to kill him very fast or instantly as in the past, but it was definitely a fatal shot.  He only had moments left when I took the 2nd shot which went into the right eye.

Thanks buddy.  You can't keep up with me, and I can't keep up with Jeff!  :-)
But I only have just under 1 acre to work with so I have an excuse :)

This shed alone has produced more than 20 g-hog kills over the last 3-4 years, and probably another 20 or more from the other holes.  My property is just a g-hog factory :-)

Good job on the squirrel.  I chose to live them alone since they 're out of season.  Don't want to give my jerk neighbor an excuse to call the cops.. It's funny, they now seem to come up to me or walk 12ft away from me like they want to play..  My play time with them starts in 3mos..

Thanks Stan.  Actually my Integra is really dirty.  I haven't washed it since April.  It's a dedicated race (autocross) car so I only drive it to and from the race events.  It rained about 30min. before the g-hog made his appearance so the cars may look cleaner than they look.  I also managed to finish cutting the lawn (takes me 1.5hrs w/the tractor) just before it started coming down.

I think you enjoy calling my 36 a 34, don't you?  :-)  That's ok it has the 34 powerplant but with better wood.. but it's 36 dang it!  hehe

Great shooting Harry, I have a groundhog that has been eluding me for a couple weeks now I only see him when I pull in the drive way. And a couple attempts to get into my garden but I fixed the fence so he has to dig a little deeper so now its just a waiting game. And my neighbor was mad at me about my "bb guns" he was mad I did not get that groundhog yet because he took out all his zucchini. So now I'm on high alert looking out all windows as often as I can, the wife keeps asking what I'm doing and all I do is smile. How was your trip to NJ and did you get your 350 back yet

Heh heh...the old brain's stuck in first gear.  34 or 36...what's the difference...just 2 small numbers.  :o)  Just as long as it gets the job done.

Hi Phil!  I 'm taking the family to the Jersey shore tomorrow for a couple of days since I took off this week for some R&R and pest control :)
No I haven't gotten the 350 back yet.  Curtis is waiting for some special self lubricating brass rod for the top hat and guide that is also very dense and used on the space shuttle(!?).

Anyway, just keep checking those windows and you 'll spot him.  I check about every hour or two when I work from home and every couple of days I get lucky and spot one.  I don't always go after them right away.  Only when the conditions are right and usually I just watch them at first to learn their habits, record the time they come out (in my head) and what hole they retire to after they fill their belly.  They are creatures of habit and tend to come out around the same time every day if all is quiet in the neighborhood.  They also learn and study our habits believe it or not and adjust their feeding time.  If they see you out there frequently in the afternoon working on the garden or mowing the lawn, they 'll come out "early" in the morning (8-9am) if it's warm enough ~60deg, and/or after you have driven off to work.  Others will come out in the early evening or around dinner time (must be daylight) after everyone is home from work.  If you hear noises outside from your neighbor's, work crew down the street, or someone is cutting the lawn or weed wacking across the street or next door, don't bother checking the windows.  They won't come out until there is a "calm" in the neighborhood.  That's when you look for them.  Sometimes they come out if there are a lot of birds around or a pack of Starlings.  They must think that if all those birds are out there, it must be safe.  I had one come out in the middle of a big squirrel fight.  There were about 20 squirrels fighting in the trees behind my house and this g-hog took me by surprise.  I was in my porch watching the squirrels fighting and chasing each other (it was very noisy) when I see the g-hog come out of his hole and start feeding with a dozen or more squirrels 20ft above his head causing havoc, like it's just another day.  I think the squirrel and bird noises attract them or make them feel safe with all the other animals around - there are more eyes to look out for danger.  As you can tell I got nothing better to do than watch g-hogs.... and then shoot them  :-)
