CFX Pest Control Outing
« on: September 26, 2006, 12:42:24 PM »
Haven't fired my CFX in a while so decided to hit the duck farm and do some CFX pest control.  Grabbed a tin of Superdomes and pointed the dodge towards the farm.  Arrived to find a couple of huge flocks of starlings raiding a couple of feeders, but they flew off as soon as I started to approach them.  I tried approaching them a few times at different feeders but they were so nervous that they never let me get close enough for a shot.  There were some pigeons at the far end of the farm mixed in with the ducks so I headed towards them in the hope I could get a clear shot.  Got into position 40 yards away from the feeder the pigeons were using and waited for a clear shot to present itself.  When the pigeons are on the ground mixed in with the ducks I can't shoot unless the pigeon presents a shot where a miss or ricochet won't hit a duck.  Anway, started to get frustrated waiting for a bird to present a safe ground shot when all of a sudden a real pretty white & grey pigeon started walking towards a little opening in the flock of ducks.  I put the crosshairs on him and waited.  As soon as he stepped into a clear patch I squeezed the GRT III trigger and the Superdome hit home.  Bird flopped around for a few seconds and then expired.
The flock of pigeons took flight and began circling the duck farm so I just sat still and waited.  Sure enough they came back to the same feeder.  Long story short,,,,,2 more shots and 2 more dead pigeons.  After that the rest of the birds took off and never returned.  As I got up to walk back to my truck I saw a large flock of starlings in a tree that was on the other side of one of the barns.  Using the barn and some farm equipment as cover I was able to sneak to within 30 yards of the tree.  I put the scope on a starling right at the top of the tree, squeezed the trigger and heard that "thwack" of the superdome hitting the birds breast.  The starling dropped as dead as a stone to the ground and the remaining birds took off at warp speed.
God I love that CFX !!  The thing is so accurate it's amazing.  If the weather cooperates I'm gonna head back to the farm tomorrow and give the CFX a chance to kill more pests.
