why?
« on: October 11, 2006, 12:02:15 PM »
I've had a RWS Diana 24 for a couple of years now and enjoying shooting it, but one thing has always puzzled me about the gun. When I bought it the rating for it was 495 fps, but most of the literature I find on the internet rate this gun at 700FPS. Why is there this discrepency and if my will only shoot at 495 fps, is there a modification I can implement that will bring it up to the 700fps spec I see so often. Any insight members have about this will be greatly appreciated.

Are you in Canada? It sounds like you have a detuned version of the 24. You'll be glad to know though that the full powered version is really only a mid-high 500's rifle. It is RWS that inflates velocity ratings so rediculously, Diana rates the .177 24 at 574fps....and the full powered version will do that, but no where near 700fps...that's an RWS fairytale.

So if you went and made your rifle over 500fps and 4.2fpe you would be in possesion of an unregestered firearm in Canada, and the most you would gain is 50-75fps anyway. Worth it? I personally don't think so. HTH,

Thanks Mulby. Yes I am in Canada. And yes I am glad to know that the full powered version is actually only marginally more powerful than the rifle I current use. But  I'm sure that some RWS 24 owners that think they have a 700 fps rifle would not be too pleased to know that their gun performs much lower than the manufacturers published spec. Granted there are many variables that one can factor into the fps stat (pellet weight, ect), but it seems a little dishonest to me.

It's all about marketing Jim. Some manufacturers are worse than others.

The most important thing to remember here is that the manufacturer IS being honest. Diana is the manufacturer and rate the 24 at 574fps. "RWS" is just a distributor, and THEY jack up the ratings of the rifles they sell. I repeat- Diana=manufacturer and RWS=distributor! Diana=realistic and RWS=fairytales!
