Since getting into this hobby recently, I have been wondering if all these cool looking pellets live up to their hype, what with Hollowpoint this, Destroyer that, penetration, expansion, etc.
 All i had on hand to test in the HP family was the Destroyers and the CPHP

I filled a gallon jug with water, but i didnt want to just shoot through the side of the jug since animal skin is a bit softer than hard plastic.

So i used masking tape over the mouth, put the jug horizontal, and with the muzzle about 10" away fired a pellet from my Quest into the mouth of the jug.

I estimate my MV to be around 900 fps, both pellets weigh an advertised 7.9 gr.(.177)

Here are my findings:


Neither pellet penetrated the back of the jug.

The Cros. Destroyer actually peeled back the forwad facing cup on itself, looks very cool and made the dia. noticeably bigger.

 The CPHP didnt do much except the hollow in the nose got a little bigger, and the pellet compressed lengthwise, but the OD didnt look much bigger at all.

Destroyers: 1  CPHP: 0

Too bad the CPHP shoot better than the Destroyers at 25yds in my gun, LOL.

Yeah the CPHP's don't expand much at all.  They did a little when I dug them out of plywood but looked about the same as a regular CP.  When I dug a couple of them out of the duct seal there was no noticeable expansion.  

The CPHP's are much accurate for me than the Destroyers in a couple of my guns too, so I don't use the Destroyers much.  Luckily they were les than $4.00 so no big loss there.

Now the Crow Magnums are REAL hollow points.  Here 's a pic of a .22 Crow Magnum 18.2gr that I dug out of plywood.  I consider plywood to be more similar to hitting bone than electrical putty.  Both CM's had expanded to 0.31"!  That would be a nice .31 cal. exit hole from a big fury small-game animal.  I was very impressed with the CM's on squirrels I took between 20 and 30yds using the 350 .22.  There was like total blood loss within a few secs, and they expired almost immediately.  One squirrel I shot at 32-33yds did not have an exit wound but bled very badly from ears, nose & mouth, and he didn't even flinch after he got hit.  I have yet to try them in .177 but I may start using them this winter on my Diana 36 for squirrels if accuracy is decent.  They have above avg. accuracy in my 350 up to 30yds.
