Nice work Tim, that grip set is coming along nice!

The colors remind me of something:

That was the very first Talon grip set I ever made, Cocobolo and Maple.  That Cocobolo is nasty stuff, after that first gripset I never used it again, makes my head hurt, garage smell and machines rust.  That's when I switched to Poplar and bedliner:

Looks like you are well on your way, can't wait to see them all finished out, should be pretty snazzy.  Those are fun grips to make, wish I still had the time to make 'em:(

WOW DAN!! NICE WORK!! Just when I was feeling good about my latest (projects), I just knew you or Tim N would "set me straight"!!LOL!! Yeah Dan,, mixing differant woods brings on new challenges (Laminated),, Im still "playin round" with what I got!! Cant just go out to the Ole Wood Pile & grab 10% moisture content stock to work with!! I got lots a Black Cherry,, Walnut,, Maple,, Red & White Oak,, Maple I cut on my Wood Mizer Sawmill thats "Air Dried",, 20% just aint gonna work!! Wife aint too happy,, but Im bringing in a stash of "Thin Stuff" inside now,, couple of months should have some PRIME stuff!! Again Dan,, Thanks for your post,,, Yup,, Ya just gotta love Poplar,, man that stuff is easy to work!! (Little "Furry" though!!) Tim.

I like walnut, and maple is good too, not real fond of oak on a gun (corrosive to blued finishes I've been told) and never messed with cherry, but ya never know till ya try:)  The Cocobolo tends to bleed into the lighter colored maple, you spend alot of time sanding and resanding, then you have to have it all spotless clean before you oil it or the oil will mix the colors again.  I use Steve Corcorans custom oil finish on the good wood, it's really easy to rub on once you have everything sanded good....I usually put it on while I watch tv:)  I like using the poplar for stuff that gets bedlinered because it's so easy to work with and still strong....also readily available at most big box hardware stores.  Personally I find poplar with anything but paint or bedliner on it a pretty boring wood, may as well call it "hard pine", haha!!

I probably made a little over a dozen Talon grips/pistol stocks till I ran out of time and kinda got bored making them, especially since I no longer own a Talon.  Working with the ergonomics of that gun is nearly impossible.  You can make it better, but it'll never be great.  The lack of any slope to the buttstock, and the short LOP puts your trigger hand in a really awkward and twisted position.  The standard plastic childsized grip actually would make my hand cramp after a few dozen shots, bad enough that I didn't like shooting that gun at first.  Funny enough I followed your first post where you said that you liked the stock grip, but didn't like the laminate grip.  I hated the stock grip and really liked the gripset I had like your laminates.  I actually kept that gripset on my Talon all of the time, even when I started making them.  I liked mine alot also, but I always sold whatever I made and the other set fit my hand real well.  Maybe I have gorilla hands, haha!!!

I still have all of my patterns, maybe one day I'll make a few more......maybe if I ever get another Talon:)

Keep it up, you SHOULD feel good about your work it is GRADE A top notch!

Take care,
Dan

Lowering the scope on those guns is always an issue, that is part of why I moved away from that particular brand of rifle.  To see through the scope the scope has to be high or you need a head the size of a peanut.  Since most peoples heads are larger than peanuts you get the high scope.  Because the scope is so high compared to the barrel bore the angle formed between the line of sight and the barrel bore is very steep.  Shooting at any yardage the gun is sighted in for is great, those guns are super accurate, however because of that sharp angle the ranges in between and past that sight-in range require a fair amount of holdover/holdunder.  Measure the distance c-t-c from barrel to scope, then stick those numbers into something like the Chairgun software, sight in for say 15 yards with whatever pellet you like to use and your average velocity and you'll see graphically how far off your line of sight will be at various common ranges.  Maybe if I was a better judge of distance I would be better at shooting the Airforce guns, (shrugs).  The real proof to me was at a shootout our local group had last year.  I got the gun all sighted in for about 30 yards and it was a real tack driver at that distance which also gave me a good secondary POI way out in the distance somewhere, but for the life of me I couldn't hit anything at any range +/- 10 yards before or beyond those sight in points.  Like I said if I was a better judge of distance I could probably figure out how to shoot it better, but my more standard guns with a bore to scope c-t-c of 1.5 inches or so I can hit at least 50% more of what I'm aiming at....maybe just me:(

Sorry, went off on a tangent there.  Your grips look great.  You'll figure out after a couple sets what feels better and what doesn't, there is tons of improvements possible with that gun.  Best thing to remember is to enjoy making them, I did:)  I'm not a real woodworker, I just play one on TV....hehe!
