Which PCP?
« on: August 02, 2008, 01:45:50 PM »
Hi everyone! I am facing dilemma. I have decided to buy me a PCP and I am looking at AirForce Condor. There are alot of features I like about it and I was planning to send to Talon Tunes for modifications but then I saw a FX Gladiator which has dual tank and shrouded berrel and it is multi shot. But you cannot change barrels and it is not as powerful as Condor. So the question is, which one, would you guys, advise me to buy?
If some of you had any experiences with FX Gladiator or any other of their rifles please tell me. I heard alot about Condor- good and bad , but I heard that it could also be a very sweet rifle if modified.
So what do you think? Please help me out brothers!
Thank you

Hi, Anatoliy!  Just curious, if power is your goal, why did you sell the AR6?  It's far more powerful than even a Condor, and it's a multi shot.  But on to your question.

To answer your question, I need to ask a couple.  What do you want to do with your rifle?  I'm assuming hunting, but how big is the game you're after?  The Condor is rated at something like 60 fpe in .22, but at that kind of power level, I wouldn't expect much in the way of accuracy.  I have a custom Talon SS that can easily duplicate Condor power levels, but I find that my accuracy is best in the 40 fpe range.  Which is way more than I need for the game I shoot :-).  It's also very loud at those power levels, and it's expensive to quiet it down.  It also makes for a very long, unwieldy rifle IMO.

Next question, do you like tinkering with your rifles, or do you want something that's ready to go right out of the box?  If you don't like tinkering, DON'T get an Air Force rifle!  They're great guns, but you HAVE to spend some time getting them dialed in, and that also means you just about have to have a chrony.  And how important is it to be able to change barrels?  In the last year, I've had two Talon SS's, with 6 different barrels.  I'm currently down to one, an 18" .22, and that rifle is going to be on the market soon.  I ALMOST offered it to you in trade for the AR6, but I just didn't need the power.

I have no personal experience with FX rifles, but I've heard good things about them.  Expensive, though, a Condor would be quite a bit cheaper.  An Air Arms S410ERB would be less expensive than a Gladi8tor, would produce about the same power level, and I know those are GREAT rifles.  My older 400E will do 27 fpe, it's a .177, and the integral barrel shroud is very effective, the pellet strike makes more noise than the rifle.  And the shroud on the newer guns is supposed to be even more effective.  The trigger is outstanding, the Condor isn't anywhere close to the same class.  Again, I don't know about the FX, maybe Dano can chime in, he had one.

I just realize I haven't answered your question, specifically, which rifle to buy.  My advice, buy an AA S410.  You already had a power house, apparently it wasn't what you were looking for.  Recommending an AA S4xx is kind of like recommending breathing, there's just no way you can go wrong :-).  Hope that helped, and if you have any more questions, fire away.  Later.

Dave

Thank you Dave for your detailed answer. Concerning me selling my Evanix AR6 I am still trying to get over this fact that I do not have it. I really really really love it. I would never sale it if I could solve the problem of noise. It is really loud and I cannot go out into the wild very often. I like to tinker with things and I very confident I would be able to make MuzzleBrake for it but I do  not have lathe or any other tools to do it. Back in my country I had those things but not here.
The reason I wanted to buy Condor is because it is very good take down rifle I can make it very portable, even send it part by part back to my country if I will move back.  Also I can have more shots per  fill especially lf I have spare tank. Also I wanted to  get custom shroud  (since no one could figure out the way to make shroud for Evanix) for it by Anthony Anuzzi and in .25 cal  I would use that .25 cal for hunting and I wanted to get .22  or.177 berrel with micro tank just for plinking or target practice.
I actually am thinking about AA s400 but I don't know yet. I really like the classic look of the rifles with wooden stock but again when I move back to my country it will be much easier to transport the Condor. Oh gosh! so many good choices!! I am struggling. And I cannot not buy one becuase I am addicted to air rifles.
I really greatful for your answer. And this is me explanation. What do you think?
Anatoliy

If I had the cash I would go with the Gladi8tor.  I have shot the Gladi8tor, the Condor, the Talon, and the AA S410 Classic, and out of the three the biatalon cocking lever and trigger on the Gladi8tor make it hard to pass up....the Airforce rifles aren't even in the same league....sorry Airforce people, they aren't.  Personally I would look at other FX rifles like the Cyclone, but only because I'd rather have a wood stock than a bottle against my head.  The Air Arms guns as DaveD pointed out are also awsome guns, I just got my first and I am totally happy with it.  I haven't shot the new side lever Air Arms S410, but the biathalon cocking on the FX guns is just soooo sweet.  Just my $0.02

Mine is a condor that I have had three years now and just had the tune up and up grade from Talon Tunes. I couldn't be happier. With a 10-40x56 Rex scope, laser, Shroud, I'm as happy as a ground hog in soft soil. Now I looked deep in to FX guns. Especially the Monsoon & Revolusion. Wonderful guns but not made in America were parts and add ons are easy to come buy.
Not as simple as the condor and easy to work on. And not as accurate as a single shot. There are 4 barrel sizes from .177 to .25 and I know a guy working on a 9 mm barrel. I can change the barrel myself in 5 minutes. A guy in Virginia set his up as a cross bow and hunts deer with it. You can't do any of that with the FX guns. I would still love to add a FX to my collection but I shoot for one purpose...accuracy! The Condor always test my skills. Hopes this helps you make the right choice. They are both nice guns.

If you are looking for plenty of power go with the condor.  In .25 you get about 90ft.lb of energy, and under 1 inch groups at 50 yards.  It is strong enough to  cleanly take down an animal as large as a coyote at short distance.  With the shroud it is EXTREMELY quiet, it sounds like someone dropping a dime on the ground, actually quieter than that.  The noise is VERY low and the power if very high, so if you are looking for high power and low noise than this is the one.

Buy them all. You're infected and incurable. They're way too much fun.
