DISCOVERY 100 SHOT COUNT ONE FILL
« on: November 10, 2008, 12:04:35 PM »
With winter setting in the 50 yard range is behind me for the most part so I put a 2250 hammer spring in the Discovery for winter indoor 16 yard shooting and I was pleasantly surprised with the results . I left the power adjuster off changed the spring used the normal CPH 10.5 .177 pellets with a 1700 PSI fill .I will break it up is groups of 20 but all 100 were in one fill .
String #1 - 650, 648, 648, 648, 652, 664, 658, 657, 657, 670, 670, 683, 676, 680, 691, 685, 684, 697, 690, 690, Average 670
String #2 - 684, 683, 684, 690, 690, 679, 691, 692, 695, 699, 686, 689, 694, 707, 697, 703, 701, 710, 715, 705,   Average  695
String #3 - 700, 708, 708, 718, 713, 708, 712, 711, 715, 718, 720, 718, 721, 720, 718, 718, 718, 721, 719, 713,   Average 715
String #4 - 716, 713, 715, 719, 720, 721, 717, 723, 721, 716, 710, 716, 718, 716, 712, 707, 710, 699, 702, 701,   Average 714
String #5 - 696, 695, 695, 695, 690, 688, 684, 691, 671, 678, 663, 663, 657, 651, 649, 641, 638, 631, 631, 621,   Average  666
The end PSI was about 500 PSI and the total average was 692 . At that yardage POI shift was marginal .Marvin

I must admit even though I have a tank and compressor its nice not to have to fill so often . Its less wear and tear on equipment . Marvin

So all you did was remove the hammer pin, then pulled out the tube plug and swapped the spring and you are getting 100 shots!   680 FPS is plenty for me in my backyard range (20-22 yards).

1.  Do you have an HDD?
2.  Where can one obtain a 2250 hammer spring.  I guess I can call Crossman.   What would be the difference between this and dialling down one of Big Ed's power adjusters to the same FPS?
3.  I've been looking at buying the CPH's in .177 from pyramid.  I'm cheap so I need to get a 4th tin/box of comperable value so I may end up with 3 boxes of CPH's and 1 of CPL.  Would just hate to have 3 boxes of CPH's and find out my Disco doesnt like them.   I take it your Disco likes them.

Thanks for sharing your experiments.  I enjoy reading them....

Yes the hammer spring . Part number 782-024 . It should work with Ed's power adjuster if you already have it . Or you can make your own adjuster it is very easy . There are directions here on this forum . Timmy ask about mods for the Discovery and the directions are in that thread . No I do not believe the HDD is that helpful . From what I have seen it only yields about a 10 percent gain and it is a 3 handed task to install. The CPH 10.5 work well in the Discovery . The other pellets that should work well would be the silver sting at 8.61 , or the kodiak 10.6 . I have not used them but they both have a wide head and skirt as well as length . The barrels on the Discovery are un choked . Mine is .177 in the lands and a minimum of .180 in the groves . I am going to do some test firing tomorrow and retrieve the pellets to get a better measurement of the groves . But that is a common barrel size for the Crosman line . Marvin

Marvin,   Just one more bit of clarification.  I can use the spring on the power adjuster OR solo to get the results you described.  I have an adjuster on order and was hoping I could just dial the power down to where you are at and get 100 shots.    I ordered a HDD too so I can try it out and remove it if it yields results like you described.

Thanks again.

You can use the spring by its self which is what I did other than leaving the home made guide in and the results should be about the same . Every rifle is a little different . You need to talk with Ed he may be using the 2250 spring in his adjuster or he might set yours up with it . The adjuster and a stock spring will not power the rifle down  only up . Marvin

Marvin,   I'm using a TKO muzzle brake and I like the results.  I noticed that when I fill to 2100 PSI she is fairly quiet, and the Disco starts to bark a bit more as the PSI approaches 1400.   I'm wondering if you have any observations about the sound when you swapped out the stock spring for the lighter one?

Thanks,

Yes under 700 FPS the pellet hitting the target is louder than the rifle but once the FPS hits 700 you hear the rifle is a little louder than the impact . Marvin
