Need Pricing Advice
« on: November 30, 2008, 01:59:12 PM »
Hi Folks, I haven’t been on this forum for a while.  I need your knowledgeable input.  I purchased a Gamo Hunter 440 from Natchezss about a year or so ago, and I need to sell it because I need the money.

I don’t want to let it go for too little, and get ripped off, but I don’t want to expect too much either.  I don’t know how judge what is a good price for both parties.  I would like to sell it as a win/win situation.

Here is a layout of the equipment:

1) Gamo Hunter 440, in very good condition.  It has been kept in my gun closet when not in use.  There is a slight scratch, near the end of the stock.  You can see it in one of the pictures.  It’s not bad at all.

2) Installed GRT-III trigger.  The gun has not been professionally tuned, however, it does have a Charlie Da Tuna trigger.  It is amazing how much difference that trigger makes!

3) Accu-shot scope mount and rings with scope creep stop pin installed.

4) BSA air rifle scope, 2x7x32 with AO

5) Pellets:  This gun prefers the domed shaped pellets.  The best performer is RWS Superdomes.  I am including at least 300 of those.  It also likes Crosman Premiers (in the box), and they shoot about like the RWS Superdomes with no scope adjustments.  I am including at least 200 of those.  I am also including at least 300 Gamo Magnum Pro’s.  It likes those as much as the first two, but you do have to tweak the scope settings a click or two from where you set it for the Superdomes and Premiers.  Finally, I have at least 200 of another German domed pellet.  I forget the brand.  The gun shoots these well, but just slightly not as good as the 3 types mentioned above.

So when I list this Gamo package on the Airgun classifieds, what should my asking price be, and what should be my absolute lowest price?

Thank you!

Boy, trying to price a 440 is a tough one. The last ones to get sold through a normal retailer went for $100, but a few years ago they retailed for something on the order of $200.

There's 2 on gunbroker right now with a starting price of $150, one new and one slightly used with a $25 scope. No bids on either one, and I wouldn't be surprised if neither one sold.

Seems to me that $150 might be a fair minimum, considering you have the better scope and trigger.

But I'm open to being told I'm wrong...

I appreciate the input.  What makes this one interesting is the package.  As you said, a nice scope/mount, and Charlie trigger included...not to mention the extra pellets.

If anyone will know, it will be ya'll.  We'll see what the consensus is and then I'll hit the classifieds!

Thank you again!

I think Vince is right on par with what you've got. $150-175 should be fair in my opinion.

Hunter sport with wood stock, one piece mount and 3-9x40 scope is 180$ new - I think that's roughly comparable. I think that the 125$ sounds more like it than the 175$. You also need to remember that scoped big cat is only 140$ - composite stock but the performance is the same.
If some is good and more is better - then too much is just right.

But consider...

His 440 deal might be considered more desirable than the Hunter Sport for 6 reasons:

1) No plastic-covered barrel. Some guys see this as cheap cost-cutting by Gamo, and much prefer a solid steel barrel.

2) CDT Trigger installed. This is what - $32? - and solves one of the two big complaints about Gamo's.

3) The 440 has open sights, the Hunter Sport does not. And it is not a simple matter to retrofit them as it was on the old 890, for example.

4) The Hunter Sport has a plainer stock, some guys prefer checkering on the pistol grip.

5) $10-$15 worth of pellets included

6) Although the Hunter Sport's scope is larger, it doesn't have AO.

1 - True, but it won't rust or loose it's finish either.

2 - Quite right, that is some 30$ extra unless you fix the trigger with the screw trick.

4 - A matter of opinion, personally I could not stand the 440 stock but I like the hunter sport

6- Then again if you adjust the parallax on the scope you don't need the AO, well at least with low magnification values. I have mine parallaxed to 10m and the 9 times mag is only good for 5-15m while 5 times works for all shooting ranges.

Would actually be quite interesting to know how much it sells for eventually  :)
