Refinish Question.
« on: January 09, 2009, 01:21:58 AM »
I have a few B3-1's from south summit and tools now. The SS ones had a pretty poor finish, so I ended up painting them. Looks great, but chips easily. Has anyone tried powdercoating one? Powdercoating is pretty near bulletproof and has a large variety of colors including Chrome ( If you can't hit 'em. blind 'em). If so, who did it for you and how much $ did it cost? Thanks.

I've not done powder coating but, I have duracoated and cericoated ( ceramic coating ) and my powder burners and some air guns but it isn't cheap starts at around 135.00 if you have disassembled the the gun and cleaned all the parts. Check with Ed (ShadowCamo Designs ) I know he has done full guns stocks and all he could tell you the durability of what he uses. My stuff has held up well.

What kind of paint did you use?, rattle can paint does work great if that's what you used but the main part is the prepping and sealing the project. Dy time is also a must between coat's. Ed

Hit the WWW link at the bottom of my post. I painted and or touched up all you see there, the Yellow one complete. I used to be a commercial painter for a number of years when I was younger, before I realized I never saw an old painter! Must be a reason. Anyway, I am very versed in prep and application, but have yet to see a truely bullet proof paint that will withstand tree bumps or Scope clamps. Powdercoating can. It can also be done at home if needed via purchase of equipment from Eastwood, and something small like a B3 can be torn down and heat cured in you kitchen oven, provided SWMBO is not around!

No doubt powdercoating works but I'm not sure it's the right application for guns in general. I may have an answer why tomorrow if my duracoat buddy comes in tomorrow. If he does I will post his thoughts tomorrow night.

My camo stock's have held up pretty good over the years, including bumps, branch rub's and some of the meanest weather that Ma Nature can put out. I've layed em against tree's, on log's, you name it and even in snow. I do try to avoid this but it happens and I always make a point to wipe em down at the end of a hunt. I didn't see your link or did I miss it. Ed
