How often in using Pellgunoil on QB78 Deluxe?l
« on: January 14, 2009, 09:48:15 AM »
UPS will be dropping by and deliver my QB78..tommorow and what is the frequency on applying this oil? I decided on adding CO2 rifle to my G1 Extreme & Beeman RS2 in case my carpal tunnel  prevents me from cocking these springers.  :emoticon:  :p  Any alternaternatives to crosman pellgunoil?

What I have heard and what I do with my AR2078a is this. Take a very small drop of PelGun oil (ie, touch the tube tip to the tip of the cart) and apply it to the nipple of the full CO2 cart before you drop each of the 2 carts into the tube of the gun.  This seems to be enough to keep everything properly lubricated.  Also, be sure the threads on the CO2 tube are clean and oil those, too.  Otherwise, it can be really tough to unscrew  sometimes.  In a CO2 rifle, if you don't want to pay the $5 for a tiny tube of oil, you can just get yourself some 30-wt, non-detergent motor oil from the local auto parts store and save yourself some money.

I do the same as Tommy, a touch to the CO2 and a smidging on the threads helps. :) Ed

Thanks for the  info and is it a drop of oil on the co2 facing the trigger or both carts. For the Cap treads, should I use pellgunoil/30wt nd oil or silicone oil?

Both carts.  Don't know that it matters what you use on the threads.

Alternatives to crosman pellgunoil?
« Reply #6 on: January 15, 2009, 12:45:05 AM »
When I tuned my QB78 Deluxe, I lubed all my seals with silicone grease.
If all the seals are lubricated with silicone grease, is Pellgunoil really necessary?
Couldn't silicone grease be an alternative to Pellgunoil?

Just got the QB78D today and just got her cleaned up with googoo gone and polished the stock. Was not able to sight in yet. I noticed that when I cocked the gun there is only slight resistance with a click when pulled the bolt and have spring resistance closing the bolt. It fired with no problem and just curious about the spring resistance when closing the blot for i was expecting spring compression for the hammer when pulled back. This my first bolt action CO2 and didn't have a clue. I got a lot of reading to get this to fire in the 600++fps with .22 in the future. I have to get use to this quit rifle with no recoil..i can make it go pfffft. Any advice on this chinky?

Well, I suggest that folk put one drop of PellgunOil on the flat end of the Powerlet facing into the gun every 200 to 300 shots. It works for me and we do this for every new "Gold Service" tested QB78-family gun we sell. But, there's many versions of "how much" and "when", as you've already seen :-)

QB78s compress the hammer spring when the bolt is pushed forward. This "cock on closing" effect is why it's harder on the forward stroke. Most of these guns become easier to cock with time or tuning.

Just got the QB78D scoped, question is..I took the open sights and the back left me with three holes, no problem from the front sight for I installed a brake to hide the screw hole. How can I conceal the three holes and was thinking of rotating the barell 180. The owners manual show it's held with single set screw plus the strap band and 3 O- rings. Thanks to all thats' feeding me with informations!!

For those who may not know, Stephen Archer is a true expert on the QB78 family of CO2 air rifles.  Check out his web site.  I would certainly defer to his recommendations on this matter.  Thanks Stephen.

Unfortunately rotating the barrel 180 degrees is not a viable solution to this problem as then the gun will not work - the CO2 will not enter the barrel and pellet-loading will be blocked :-(

And - apart from that "minor" issue - the QB78 Deluxe barrel has a milled slot in the underside, through which the barrel band screw passes. So, if you rotate the barrel 180 degrees, yes you will make the rear sight holes less visible, but will have an unsightly slot in the (now) top of the barrel instead.

So, you have to leave the barrel positioned as it is. I would be inclined to plug the holes from the removed rear sight - especially the large one - in some way. Maybe dark gray epoxy would be suitable as a permanent solution.

Good luck!

Thanks Stephen!! I'll get some set screw that would be flushed I think I saw some from Ace Hardware so to protect the treads. Once I get all sorted out I'll be looking at your bulk fill and when you get your shipment for QB78D .177 barrell  so I can have a dual caliber like my Beeman RS2.
