Worked on the 853...
« on: February 14, 2009, 02:43:55 AM »
Got my rebuild kit from Champions Choice yesterday, tore it all down and resealed and lubed it.  Got it all back together, had high hopes for the freshly sealed gun, but shooing was a disappointment.  Haven't shot it over the chrony yet, but it still doesn't have enough velocity to cut clean holes with 7.9 gr. pellets, the lightest wad cutters I have.  Guess I should have ordered some match pistol pellets, something closer to 7 gr.  The new front sight makes a difference, it's much easier to get a consistent sight picture, thus better accuracy.  But it's tearing the targets so badly it's impossible to score anything.  Frustration!  I'll try a cardboard backer next, as well as some different paper for my targets, but I'd really just like this thing to shoot faster.  Any other suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks.

Sticky back tape, a cheese grater and a blowtorch will make it right, and if/when that doesn't work just box her up and send her to Texas:)  Thanks in advance Dave for adding such a nice little shooter to my collection.  I'll tell ya what, you send me the gun and I'll let you sleep on my couch when you visit in April, deal?

In all honestly, other than maybe getting some R10's or other lightweight wadcutter I have no idea what to tell you.  I'm sure we could make it faster given enough time and energy, just no clue how.  Kerosene???

Hey, pal, welcome home.  I get the sticky back tape and the blowtorch, but what do you do with the cheese grater :-)?

Actually, if I can't get at least a little more snap out of this, you might just end up scratching another one off your short list.  It's frustrating because it wants to shoot, with the combo of the rear sight I got from you and the 753 front sight, I have no problem hitting the bull off a rest.  Oddly enough, even the heavy trigger isn't a detriment to shooting well, because it's consistently heavy.  Feels the same, breaks the same, despite being 2/3 plastic.  It's VERY sensitive to pellet weight, going from a 7.9 to an 8.4 gr. pellet will cause the POI to drop more than an inch at 10M.  As to pellets, I got in an order of various match pellets last week, problem is, I went to the heavy side, 7.9 to 8.4 gr.  R 10's were one I ordered, but I got the 8.2 gr. instead of the 7.  The S200 likes them, so not a waste.

BTW, have you ever tried the Avanti match pellets?  Got a tin of those as well, what a shock when I opened it!  The damn things look like they're made of silver, nice and shiny instead of that dull lead gray.  Very clean and consistent, too, guess I need to find some tiny werewolves to shoot ;-)!

Checked the pump linkage per your suggestion, there is NO slop in it, if anything, maybe it's too stiff.  I don't know, maybe I'm just expecting too much out of it, but for a gun that's supposed to be a premier paper puncher, this one isn't punching very well.  Later.

Don't need to send it anywhere, Ron, it's a pretty easy job, even easier than changing springs in a springer.  Here's a link to an excellent pictorial tutorial that was recently posted on the Yellow forum: http://www.network54.com/Forum/79537/message/1234302331/Daisy+853+Reaseal+-+A+Pictorial+Essay  He lists a source for just the reseal kit from Daisy, but you can also order a very complete rebuild/repair kit from Champions Choice for $12:  http://www.champchoice.com/  You might have to call them, they've done a major remodel on their web site and now you can't find anything!  I've got a catalog if you need part numbers.  All you need for tools is a phillips screwdriver and a little patience :-).  But if it's too daunting, send it to me,  I'll reseal it for you, only cost would be shipping and parts.  Of course, you could probably find the correct size orings at your local hardware store.  Later.

Maybe try some RWS Hobby's?  Have you tried manila paper?  I honestly can't get printer paper to cut no matter what gun/pellet I shoot without getting some tear outs at some point.  I think even my Beeman P17 pistol will cut a decent hole with the right paper, and the 852 can't be any weaker than that gun can it?  Odd, I was sure that a reseal would fix it up.
