Betsy is sick =(
« on: May 04, 2009, 07:32:46 AM »
So yesterday after my Senior Prom I couldn't think of anything I'd rather do then take my date out to the woods and teach her how to shoot. She loved it and is picking up fast. However there's one problem. Betsy is grinding oddly when she cocks. Its not an even motion when I cock her either, it just doesn't feel right. Secondly shes not making the same sound when I shoot her. She kinda spits rather then fires, and it doesn't feel like I'm getting the same kinda power out of her, the shots seem slower to impact. Shes never done this before, and I'm kinda worried. I think she just might be jealous that she didn't get all the attention this time out, but its probably more then that. Any ideas guys? Thanks

I can see with the stock off that the spring isn't spaced evenly while its un-cocked. The coils are closer together near the trigger and further apart near the barrel. They are also not level. A few coils seem to be popping up higher then the others near the trigger.

Stop shooting your rifle,...sounds to me that the spring has snapped. Any more shooting will only do more damage to the inside of the compression tube (scarring from the broken ends of the spring). Is you rifle stock, or has it been tuned? tjk

Shes got a lube tune from Charlie around 2 or 3 years ago. Shot like a dream after that, and this is the only time shes ever given me a problem.

Now I'm getting worried, because we shot that rifle allot yesterday. On a side note, This rifle never lets me down. Even with a broken spring she still comes through for me in her most important task yet: Impressing my girl friend. I am one lucky man. ;)

Based on your description you do probably have a broken piston spring. It is natural for the spring to snap and break. I believe other members will post their recommendation for a proper maccari spring replacement for your "betsy". Good luck!

Yup and it's probably grinding against the back area of the chamber and maybe causing the piston to rub funky against the chamber also. :0 Ed

Can you repair it yourself do you have the tools or knowledge to do so.The more you shoot it like it is you could realy damage the air chamber and to fix it will take honeing the gouge out and finding a seal that will fit the new ID of the chamber.A great spring for that rifle can be found here- http://www.airguns.citymax.com/catalog/item/251488/5414946.htm

Every airgunner that shoot springers long enough will hear that sound and experience what you're going through eventually.  A broken spring.  There's alot of spring repair advice on the internet...so if you attempt to repair it make sure you USE a SPRING COMPRESSOR.
