Latest toy: Whisper 22 cal
« on: July 03, 2009, 06:52:06 AM »
My Gamo Whisper 22 finally arrived. I couldn't find any old ladies
selling a used rifle in a garage sale so I just bought a brand new
one online. Came shipped with a 3-9X40 Gamo scope, some
allen wrenches, and a sample of gold plated PBA Raptors which
I immediately threw away.

The stock is very light. I packed the butt part with shredded paper
to decrease the twang. The noise dampener seems useless next
to the rifle but seems a little more effective in reducing  muzzle bark
downrange.

I sighted the scope to 20 yards but grouping is a little open due to
the horrible trigger creep.

Not bad for a 200 dollar rifle.

Great looking airgun....the .22's going to make an impact on some poor critter that's in their way.  You should've kept the Raptors and give them to some PCP user....just to try out and hear them go super-sonic.  I've got some .177 PBA Raptors from the Gamos that I purchased...have never used them....I should try them with the pistols or my one and only .177 PCP.....just to see.  The pistols will probably do OK with them....since the guns are not that powerful, but with the PCP...even on low power....the pellet is probably going to tumble.

Get rid of that scope riser, mount directly to the rifle and tighten the crap out of it.  Check screw tightness often, that rifle shakes things loose.  Diablo Exacts work the best for me.

Why no love for the scope riser?

It gets chewed up by the double recoil action, scope slides back no mater how tight you get it. I went through two before I gave up and tossed it.

Any other option besides tossing the riser?  Any mod to install a stop or something similar?

Thanks

I took my spacer rail off because it just made the scope that much higher without improving the hold of the scope mount.

The scope was further from the stock, so it made a good, consistant cheek-weld just about impossable, plus, it put the scope further from the centerline of the bore. Both things I don't see helping any  ....   that is, unless you have a  very tall face !!!! :D

Take a close look - it's soft aluminum, with a thin cross-section. If you use rings/mount with a stop pin, it will be a "slow down" pin. I agree about the difficulty of getting any mount to secure on that rail. My Whisper is gone, but I shoulda done that...

my mount and gamo scope has worked great on my whisper but then again my was turbo tuned by cdt which makes a world of a difference so maybe gettin it turbo tuned will make this rifle act like a expensive rifle.the recoil, twang is what makes the rifle shake bottom line chage the spring you will notice a change in recoil no twange once broken in .

I mounted two different scopes on the riser with no problem. I followed the advise of other posters. Use alcohol to clean the mount and use blue loctite, then let it sit for 24 hrs.

He's right. I took mine off before sending it out to Gene for a tune and sure enough the scope stop holes were getting longer due to the scope stop pin slamming into them. So I won't put it back on when it comes back from Gene's  Airguntoys.
