Tracking Snow
« on: February 14, 2007, 10:30:43 AM »
It started snowing about an hour ago and now it's like a mini blizzard out there.  We have about an inch on the ground so far and from the weather reports we'll have another couple inches if the storm holds.  Oh boy,,,, finally some tracking snow :)   and the good thing is with the temperatures we're in now it should stay for quite awhile.

Unfortunately I'm working for the next 3 nights, but at least I'll be able to get in some later afternoon bunny tracking,,,,, and hopefully bunny shooting :)

Maybe my new  B26-2 .22 cal will get to get "blooded".  That is if I can get it sighted in tomorrow.

Nothin better than new fallen snow and fresh bunny tracks !!!!!!!!!!!!

Sound's like you got some great tracking weather buddy, nothing like fresh snow to show and tell.Get that B26-2 blooded, they'll be out looking for grub too. Heck, you'll have one in the ice box before my scope arrives for my B26-2 .177. Good luck and may the hunting God's smile down on ya. :) hunting Ed

Well Ed,  guess I won't be tracking anything for awhile,,,,,, the snow that fell was just wet enough for the 15 degree temperature to freeze solid.  So unless there are some 50 pound rabbits running around the woods near my home I doubt I'll see any any fresh tracks :(

But like you said,,, they should be out looking for eats so I'm still gonna give the afternoons a try.

I don’t know much about snow. Only seen it a couple of times my self. It would seem that steaming rabbit droppings would be better than fresh tracks.

Sorry to hear that the snow froze over. Maybe you do have 50 pound bunnies in your woods. Wow, just think one rabbit could be a week of good eats….

Keep warm Jeff and lets know how the hunt goes.

Steam disapates quicker then track's in the snow, unless your hot on his trail and and he happens to po po hehe.Fresh tracks in snow have a texture to them. the snow is still soft around them unlike overnighter tracks which harden during the night. 50lb rabbit mmm, Jeff you can almost saddle em up and ride him home hehe. Good luck on your ice hunt and just think springs coming and they'll be out in force wanting to make babies, easy pickings.:) hunting Ed

Jeff, I sent you a few emails when we both bought that Gamo 890S Hunter Cabelas had on sale recently. Now you have a new B26-2, boy you buy air rifles faster than I can get them sighted in. Where do you put them all ?

I have been thinking about getting a new springer in 22 cal., wish I could find another 890S in 22 cal. for the same price we gave for the .177. Have you had a chance to see what kind of FPS you are getting out of your B26 ?

I have been thinking about the B26 or a RWS34 in 22 cal., which one do you think has the best FPS out of the box ?

Hey Bill,

Good to hear from ya :)

As for where I put them all,,,, I had to go buy a second gun safe due to my increasing collection of air rifles but both safes are now filled to capacity and due to the recent B26-2 purchase I now have to go out and buy a third one.  I really don't feel "good" unless I have my rifles properly secured.  It gives me peace of mind when I leave them home alone :)

As for the FPS of the B26-2 compared to the RWS 34.......... Due to work and weather I haven't even had a chance to fire the B26-2 yet, but I will be chronying it and sighting it in within a few days.  When I do I'll be sure to post the results so you can look at the data.

As for the RWS 34,,,, I've never fired one so I have no experience with FPS data.  I'm sure one of the the other guys has a 34 in .22 caliber and might be able to help both of us there.  I'd actually be very interested in the FPS of the 34  also because I'm seriously considering purchasing one of the RWS Panthers in .22 caliber.

Anyway, as soon as I chrony the B26-2 I'll post the results.  Hows that 890 treatin ya?  Mines still shooting great. Talk to ya soon Bill.

Jeff, I don't think the 890 could shoot any better than what it is doing now, I'm really glad I bought that gun.

I do want another break barrel in 22 cal. but can't decide on which one. I have read a lot of good things about both guns, RWS 34 and B26. Both seem to be accurate and reliable. Let me know when you get the results of your testing.

Thanks Bill
