Hey: Let me introduce myself........
« on: July 21, 2009, 11:44:59 PM »
I appologize for not doing this sooner.
I have been around for awhile and thought I would introduce myself. My name is Charles, but most people call me Chas. I work for Rochester Armored Car in Sioux Falls, South Dakota as an armed guard. Yes it gets cold here but its a dry cold.Ha. I like it much better than all the heat and hummidity. Here we have 10 months of winter, 1 month coming and 1 month going. Just kidding, we actually have 5 to 6 months of decent weather. My day starts at 1 am when I get up and wraps up about 3:30 pm. I get to bed about 5. This is my life as I know it. I carry glocks ( I have 3 of them, Models 22, 23 & 35 all .40 S&W ) and I reload for them. I go to an indoor range every other Saturday to burn ammo. I get a great feeling of satisfaction and relaxation from shooting. I shoot from 100 to 200 rounds at each session. I have been with this company about 3 years. Its a great job and I love it.

I stumbled on Charlie Da Tunas website one day and clicked on the GTA Forum link and here I am. This forum is addicting and a day doesn't pass without me visiting, just to see whats happening and to hunt for tips and tricks.

I currently own 2 springer type air rifles, both are .177 cal., a Gamo Whisper VH with CDTs GRT-III trigger (a big improvement over the trigger it came with, the difference is incredible) and turbo tuned by Gene and it has an Air Venturi, Gas Ram. My second springer is a RWS Diana 34 with a BSA Red Dot Scope. I am anxiously waiting for a tracking number from Cobra Air Guns for my next springer, a Beeman R-9. I ordered it on Sunday and so far not a word. I wish they would hurry up already. Ha. I get a great sense of peace and satisfaction from shooting my  air rifles. What a great feeling to have. I do enjoy punching paper, and nothing can compare to popping a squirrel on a branch. Watch it jump straight up 3' and grabbing some air, dang it missed the branch again. Nope that wasn't Rocky. Ha

My Whisper is giving me headaches trying to get it to shoot with some degree of accuracy. It has already trashed 2 scopes. The Gamo scope that came with it. It sheared off the verticle adjusting knob ( see my earlier post " Gamo scope doesn't cut it" ). The other scope was a Leapers 3-9X40 I bought from Pyramid Air. The recoil on the whisper jarred loose some duff and small pieces of material on the inside and it stuck to the inside of the rear lens. I contacted Leapers customer service and they jumped on the oppertunity to make things right. Great customer service. They even called me to ask further questions. Replacement scope is on the way.

I am having problems with my Whisper. I am thinking because of the Air Venturi, Gas Ram, the recoil is destroying any of the scopes that I put on it. All screws and mounts appear to be tight. I believe that both scopes are rated at medium recoil. I will have to try the heavy recoil rated scopes out. Any suggestions?? Which ones? Where to buy? Optics Planet is my first choice ( free shipping ) huge inventory, but don't have every scope made.
The accuracy on my Whisper needs work. I suspect the scope is at fault. Can't seem to get more than 3 pellets in the same area, then 2 or 3 flyers all over the target. Maybe this is a lost cause ( getting this air rifle to shoot straight ) but I keep trying.

I have never been one for forums. This one is great.

Thanks for your time and helpful hints,
 Chas

Springers I currently own: RWS Diana 34, .177, Gamo Whisper Deluxe, .177, G RT- III trigger, Air Venturi-Gas Ram, Turbo Tuned by Gene and soon to be delivered, Beeman R-9, .177

A Big Welcome aboard Chas. Glad you are looking and learning here. The GTA prides itself on being a learning forum. There is never a question that goes by without an answer so ask as many as you need.

Your scope issue is not uncommon on the new Venturi Ram piston air guns. With that said the rule about using to heavy of a pellet does not apply here.

First thing is are you using a one piece scope mount? If not get one. BSA makes three sturdy air gun rated scopes. You can check Natchez for them in the GTA Mall.. One thing you never want to do is shoot PBA's or any pellets under 7.0 gr. That goes for the air venturi gas rams also. Especially them. Doing so will burn your piston seal up quick. Next is try using heavier pellets such as the 8.4 and 10.3 gn pellets. These should help stabalize the pellet a bit.

Good luck

Thanks Gene for the warm welcome:
I am using the Accushot one piece scope mounts on my whisper. I have tried all of the pellets in my inventory. I shoot Beeman Crow Magnums mostly at 8.8 gr. I think. I also use the JSB Exacts at 8.3 also Crossman Premier HP, Gamo Match ( probably the lightest ), Gamo Pro Magnum ( Ha, what a joke). RWS Superpoint at 8.2. I have some Beeman Field Target Special coming. Should be here in a few days. I tried all of these except the Beeman FTS and couldn't get more than 3 pellets in one group.

And so the saga continues,

Chas

Springers I currently own: RWS Diana 34, .177, Gamo Whisper Deluxe, .177, G RT- III trigger, Air Venturi-Gas Ram, Turbo Tuned by Gene and soon to be delivered, Beeman R-9, .177

Your not lost if you don't care where you are.

Welcome Chas.

Glocks, huh?  I prefer the Sigs, 9mm, 40S&W and 45ACP, but there is no accounting for taste.  I also prefer the warm weather.  Don't have to shovel heat and humidity.

My brother had the same problem with his springed Whisper Deluxe in .177.  That and the fact that the soft metal of the aluminum scope rail was gouged out by the scope stop.  Many own and love their Whispers -- guess I will leave the advice about them to someone who knows more than me about the subject.

In any case, welcome to the GTA!  Glad to have you.

Welcome to the GTA Forums Chas !!!

The BEST Air Gun Forum on the Internet !!!!! And, It's A GREAT PLACE TO BE ! ! ! ! ! ! !

I have a list of scopes that have been recomended for HEAVY RECOIL Air Guns, and the BSA Airgun 3-12X44mm AO TT, the Bushnell Elite Scopes Series, Leapers Rubber Armor Stealth 3-9x40mm, the Leapers LESCP3-416AOMDL 4-16X56mm AO SF TT, and the Simmons 44 magnum 6.5-29X44mm AO TT are the ones rated as very favorable. This list is a little old, so some model numbers may have changed !

As for accuracy, check all of your stock screws for tightness, look at the inside of the muzzle break, and see if there are any marks on the inside, it may be off center. If that is not your problem after you put a new scope on, it may be your seal !

I'm sure others will chime in with information on their Whispers.

So, now that your an airgun addicted member of or airgun family, I hope to see you here often !

Welcome to the group Chas. If you search here, you'll find many post about the whisper and some of the problems that we have had. Gene has tuned mine and I'll review his tune compared to my out of box experence. I remember your post on your scopes being destroyed, same happened to me. That gas ram is powerful. I answered your post and gave you a link to http://www.straightshooters.com they have scopes listed as light, medium and heavy. I currently have been using the Bushnell scope from Walmart with good results. You might try that after you get your Whisper tuned and working right. However, with a R-9 on the way, you might never want to shoot the Whisper again. Good luck
