which one is the better rifle? will be tuned by Mike M to 700fps and used for squirrel hunting, paper punching.

My understanding is that all the QB's are  basically the same air rifle except for the target models with the lothar barrel.

Mike can make any of them sing whatever tune you want.

The QB78 deluxe has more bling and a thicker barrel. The QB79 has a different gas block to use the paintball tanks but you can't use 12 gram carts.

I'm looking for a QB79 with those spec's myself, but it was mentioned to me that the gas block has some minor and/or occassional leakage problems.

I have been to busy to check into that and am suffering from the "mafunzalow disease" presently   :)

Now, I have to decide if I'm in the mood for a possible headache or not. I like the PB tanks myself. I might even get another RWS 850 if the QB79 gas block leakage thing turns out to be more fact than rumor.

I got a really good deal on an 850 refurb from the factory. I could always keep looking for another, but having an 850, I really want a QB.

i know what you mean i have the same disease. that is why i was considering the qb series, seems like you get a bunch of bang for the buck. the other reason is i like mike m's customer service. i also like the qb because i just lost my house to foreclosure and had to move to an apartment complex, so i need something i can make quiet. thank God the place is surrounded on all sides by wooded land, so i can get a few bunnies and squirrels. i really like the paintball tank idea just wondering what my total costs would be. i am going to sell my ruger 10/22 to get the qb because i really don't have a use for the powder burner right now. thanks for the advice.
peace

QB78  --  uses 2 powerlets (you can shoot with ONE fresh, and one empty, though, with no change in power, just fewer shots*)
QB78D --  upgraded version of the 78, uses 2 powerlets (*same as above)
QB79  --  uses a paintball or AirSource tank (with an adapter),

The QB78D (D for "deluxe") has a nicer stock, and as one of the chaps mentioned, a 15mm OD barrel (the standard 78 has a 14mm barrel, as does the 79, I believe).
The "bling" on the 78D is a gold-tone anodized bolt handle and trigger blade - the trigger internals are identical across the three models.
The QB78D also uses "fiber-optic" or "Tru-Glo" style open sights (...I don't care for 'em), while the standard 78 and the 79 have iron sights.  All three have 11mm scope dovetails on a steel breech.  If you're going to scope anyway - and you should, they are quite accurate little guns - then the sights aren't that big a deal.

All three versions shoot the same; they share the same valve, striker, and springs.  I don't find the 15mm barrels to be any better or worse than the thinner ones.

Both of the 78 versions can be converted to bulk-fill just by changing the cap.
The QB79, designed to run only on external tanks, CAN be used with a powerlet in a pinch, if you buy an adapter (paintball equipment suppliers sell them for around 30-35 bucks.)

And a final note on the QB79's; I have 3 of them (and 2 AR2079's!) and I've never had a leak from any of my tank blocks.
By comparison, the very first QB78 I bought DID leak down in about 20 minutes (bad seal), but none since.

Cheers, mate!

QB78D looks good and can be tweaked to shoot hard.
QB79 shoot a lot and tweaked to shoot hard.
As far as balance the first is the choice which the 2nd is front heavy from the bigger tank. ;d)

A QB with a LW barrel?? From MM maybe but don't look for it to be a OEM item.
