Last check before putting back the Quest

Hello everyone, I posted a few weeks ago my troubles with a broken spring of the Quest. I ordered the JM E3650 spring and a small Apex (red) seal. I de-burred every part that was rough, including the top hat, rear guide, reviever, etc. Once I got the seal in, which btw took a lot of effort because the seal is a tag larger than the stock seal. Anyhow, I tarred the spring and before I push it all the way back in, I wanted to make sure that the spring is the correct length. Below are pictures for you to look at and as you can see there are about 6 coils sticking out. Is this okay? Or is the spring suppose to be a little shorte?. I do know that these springs have preload but I just want to make sure that if this is the correct length. If you didn't order your spring "set" it is going to be a little longer than the original. Once you cock it will "set" to the proper working length. I would remove about half the lube you have on your guide. Too much lube slows the action. If you used moly "less is more".

I agree..too much grease is bad and it will find it's way to the front of the seal.

Thanks you both. Yes what I have is Moly on the guide. I guess that needs to be removed a bit according to you. This is my first ever "tuning" project, so I didnt really know how much is too much What about the tarring of the spring? Is that good enough or needs more or less as well

Wipe every other coil. Just remove a little from each and you should be fine. It will spread around when fired.

It also appears to me that the rear spring guide is a bit small. There should be NO daylight between spring and guide. Same goes for the top-hat, you want a interference fit on both. Another thing to look at is the fit of the top-hat inside the piston. The one's I have found have a poor fit, major OD being undersize. Setting the spring with sloppy guide fit is a poor practice and could ruin the spring.

Oh man, a set of front and rear guide will cost around $28 from Rich. This addition places my current total in this project at $70 + 30 for the GRT III trigger, which is what I paid for the gun. I am thinking of just selling this gun as it is and move along. I put in about 4 hours just deburring this thing yesterday and if that is not tough, the brand new Apex seal got nicked and now I am down $18 because that is how much it costs for me to get one :0

HEHE...well if you want to learn how to tune a gun, then yes I would buy a Quest because it is a good platform to learn from. However, if I were to recommend an airgun to a new-comer to this sport, I would recommend getting a RWS 34P and just enjoy that gun. It is inherently more accurate and is way better in QC, and if that is not enough, a self tune on the RWS with a Maccari kit would make it into a formidable opponent to the 300-400 dollar guns.  

As for your question if I would do a tune again? Yes...HELL YES ....its fun, and you learn so much about your gun + the joy of shooting a tuned gun is something else, doesnt matter if it something as cheap as a Quest
