Airhawk update
« on: October 11, 2009, 07:24:00 PM »
A little while back a lot of people got Recon. Ruger Airhawks from Cabelas me included. I was wondering how the Airhawks are shooting now that we have had some time to set them up. This is were mine is.

Recon Ruger Airhawk .177
Bushnell Sportsman Scope 3-9X40 w/ one piece Accushot mount
Self tune, lube and de burr
New large Apex Seal
New JM GRTMSS Spring
Remove front sight Make new crown
Replace stock screws with allen head cap screws
Loctite everything

Trigger is still very heavy and sometimes the barrel sticks and is very hard to open at the start of a cocking cycle. Other than that it shoots very smooth and quiet with no twist. I feel its going to keep getting better with use.
Gamo targets I shot from bench w/ caldwell front bag.
How do your airhawks compare with this one?

Mine is very smooth and will put one pellet in the same hole on top of each other at 10M you don't say what the distance your groups are at. also I removed the shield that goes over the spring and into the piston ,polished the spring ends , honed out the cylinder and removed one coil from the spring I am not looking for power but a nice smooth gun. also I lube tuned the trigger and am very satisfied with the gun most of my guns needed to be tuned when I got them It shoots nice and smooth and when fired their is only a thud as the pellet hits the target no crunching or any spring noises at all. howie

My Blackhawk  (synthetic stocked version) is a great shooter.  Dime sized groups at 30 yards, shooting in high 900's, smooth cocking, smooth firing cycle, no twang or torquing and a trigger that is as good as the one on my RWS 34 Panther.   All these great traits and she's still bone stock  ,,,   I love my Blackhawk......       :D

The distance is written on the target one is 50 feet the other is 90 feet. I didn't remover the shield but I did cut off the end because it was grabbing the spring end. mine is just a tube now.

In that case I' would take it out the feet hole it in the pistin with out the feet it will just slide all over up and down the spring. For 50 to 90 feet those groups are not bad, I just shoot in my garage since I live in the city. howie Going to the range is 20 bucks a day .

I bought mine from Cabellas.  I couldn't hit anything with it.  Out of the box it shot 6 inches to the right with the iron sigts and I couldn't adjust them far enough!

So I tried to tune it myself.  I managed to ruin the Apex seal putting it back in the gun, and then I dropped the trigger assembly-losing some of the pieces.

At that point I wanted to put it in the trash.  Mike Melick offered to put it back together for me and to tune it. He added an extra screw in the trigger?  Or was there supposed to be one there anyway?

Even after that I couldn't shoot well with it.  Mike has been coaching me suggesting things.  The thing that has helped the most was swapping to cheaper pellets!  I guess that is to lead back up the barrel.  So I've been shooting Daisy Wadcutters from Walmart.  In fact I ran one Walmart out of them. :D

After all of that I thought about selling it. In fact I stopped shooting it in anticipation and started looking for a box.

So it has been raining here almost constantly for a week!  I put my pellet trap out on the rail of my deck, measured off 12 yards, and started shooting it with a more steady mount.  I fined tuned my scope alignment and started geting virtuall one hole groups.  After that I felt bad and took it off the market.

Mike did a wonderful job on it.  It is just so smooth and easy to shoot.  I took an investment of $$, practice, and patience but it is shooting pretty good right now.  Since it has been raining I haven't shot it at longer ranges lately, but I was able to shoot tin cans free hand out the door at 40 yards with ease.  It still likes cheap pellets!  I can't hit anything with good ones! :D

I bought two of them. On one I mounted a BSA 6-24x40 after cleaning her up a bit. The wood was just about perfect. I initially had to return the first gun due to a broken rear sight. Ironically I ended up removing the rear sight due to the length of the scope that I purchased. I also have  a Air Hawk that I purchased new and I compared the two guns against each other. The "new" gun has a pretty good trigger, however the refurb has almost a hair trigger that is somewhat scary. I sort of exercise real caution when shooting it. I am wrestling with having it sent out for tuning before putting it to serious shooting. The groupings are really, really tight, and other than the light trigger I really like the guns. The second refurb that I purchased (still in the box) is for my brother and it awaits his arrival for the holidays.
