Red dot scopes?
« on: December 24, 2009, 07:41:26 AM »
In looking at some advertising material on Red Dot scopes I have questions. I use a variable power rifle scope on my Blizzard. These red dot scopes are all normal vision, not magnifying or variable magnification scopes.  What is the advantage with that? You can't bring in a close sight picture with no magnification so how can they help you to shoot better?  I like the higher power to really bring in a varmint so I can concentrate on putting the pellet through the eye, earhole or right where I want. With no magnification wouldn't it be nearly impossible to do so with accuracy?

They're more for close range work and rapid target aquisition. It's easier to use a red dot for reflex action style shooting than a scope and you dont need to align front and rear sights. Just put he dot on the target and squeeze.

The reason the majority of them are low or no magnification is to make it easier to use them with both eyes open. Some people have trouble if the picture in one eye is magnified and the other isn't. My dad for example would get headaches from it unless he wore his glasses that had 1 lens blacked out.

Joshua, I like them because they lessen the over-all weight of a rifle and acts as a great counter-balance. Ex:  a long gun  like a Diana350/B-28A. Another thing I like is it's very close to using the 'irons'. Not as easy to line up9for me at least), but once done, it'll give you a decent quarter sized accuracy in the 30 yard range off-hand. Forget the low end  Crosman/Daisy RD's. A good one to try out to see if you like them is the Tasco's sold at Wally-World for around $40. I hunt and plink more than I paper-punch, so I rarely ever crank up the magnification for my purposes. I say give the RD's a 'shot'!!! LOL's Best Wishes, tjk

It's for close quarters stuff.  Picked up a cheap Truglo one, as well as a picatinny rail for a buckmark at the Cabela's bargain cave. and hope to get it sighted in at 25 yards, and practice some Mozambique Drills with it

I just ordered a Tasco 1x30 red dot tonight from a camera shop in NYC. Really looking forward to seeing how I like it on my Gamo, and my new/used 1377. I'll be sure to take some pictures and comment on how it all works out.
