Is there something wrong with my Whisper?
« on: February 26, 2010, 01:19:48 PM »
Well here is the deal.  My Whisper is by far the most accurate gun I own and I own a bunch!  Despite what folks say about Gamo guns at times, this one is just so easy to shoot it is amazing.  However, when I compare the hitting power of my Air Hawk and my Whisper the Whisper doesn't seem to be hitting as hard.  I don't have a chrony so I'm not sure if it is true or not.

I shot a phonebook today with both and the Air Hawk was way more powerful.

Do you think I've messed up my seal or spring?  If it is shooting accurately would you even worry until there was a problem?

When I mean accurate, I mean shoots in one hole almost no matter the range.

Get a chrony and save on the guessing game.

I am by no means an expert on air rifles Randy, but if the cocking force and the point of impact have not changed noticeably, the power difference is probably a matter of the difference in the internal parts of each gun.

I agree that a chronograph is a good diagnostic tool, but you have no baseline data from when it was new to compare to now that there is a question. Although, you can still compare the results with other Whisper owners.

If the whisper shoots pellets into the same hole like it did new, Heck, If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Just my 2 cents.  snookman

Personally, if it hits where you aim, and it sounds like it is, I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it's accurate and you need more knock down power, you can always change the type pellets you're using to Predators or HPs.

It sound's like all is ok ,a bad piston seal can show's itself with an erratic shot pattern. If you decide to really get into your airguns and want to keep tab's on their health you need a chrony bro if fund's allow it. They pay for themselves big time and takes a lot of the guess work out of diagnosing your shooters health. Ed

I checked The cocking resistance on mine with a bathroom scale when I bought it & it was @ 30-32lbs.
I felt mine was failing & I knew for sure when I rechecked it & it read 20lbs on the scale. I also had a 1x4 piece of pine I shot
when I bought it. Rechecked & it also lost penitraiton.
I don't own a chrony.
Had this rifle  for only 2 months.
Returned it.

Randy,,,,, simply sounds like the air hawk is just more powerful,,,, which doesn't surprise me.  My blackhawk is one of the hardest hitting .177's I have and as you know it's the same power plant as the air hawk.  If your whisper was losing a substantial amount of power it would quickly reveal itself in it's overall accuracy, especially at longer ranges.

Do yourself a favor though,,,, get yourself a chrony as time and money permit.   You'll never be sorry.  As the others have said the chrony takes all the guess work out of diagnosing if your air gun is losing power or there's a problem.....

I"m kinda siding on about if it isn't broke.....I mean it is accurate all the way out to 35 yards which is as far as  I can shoot!  I just would have thought that the Whisper and Air Hawk would be similar in power.  My friends like the Air Hawk better because they think it is more powerful.  I like the Whisper because I know it is more accurate :)

I had the same problem last week with my Hunter. SHot pin point but was not penetrating so broke out the chrono and was almot 200 fps slow! Bought the seal kit and built my spring compressor and will have her back up and running soon with better seals. I am concerned because I plan to start the kids out with some small game hunting next season so I need the hitting power of 930+ fps not the 9 fpe of 730's or less. Plus  me and my dad are always competeing so I need all that I can get from my guns to stretch them out farther and farther. I have hit at 60 yds consistanly and plan to try farther when he gets out here and we find a place to shoot farther. He is getting older and eyes are not so good anymore, maybe this year I will win. Gotta take advantage of all that I can. lol

I'm no expert but if your whisper is still shooting in the 900+ range you should be able to zero it at 20 yards and it will be back on zero at 37-40 yards. If it is loosing power it will fall short of the 37-40 yard mark. A 800+ gun will zero in at 20 yards and be back on at 30 yards.
