scope problems

hi all... i'm  new to the airgun shooting world. had bb gun as a kid but started shooting springers with my son in law last month. it hasn't happened to me yet but he has had 2 scopes ( a gamo and a center point) go from a "+" crosshair to a " x" crosshair. he traded in both guns for different guns but i wonder is this a fixable problem or just keep getting new ?    thanks,  mike

If the scope itself did not rotate in the scope mounts, and that should be obvious the turrets on the scope would have moved, then I would say the scopes were faulty and got beat up by the recoil of the guns. I would get better scopes and not guns.

To say the scopes were faulty though we kinda need to know the guns they were on. The type of scopes. Stuff like that.

And welcome. I am fairly new here also but am having a blast here and enjoying all the people who have fun shooting air rifles too. I got my first one when I was 12 and have been shooting them since.

Most OEM scopes that comes with combo airguns have a mediocre scopes. The internal of your scope just rotated and will continue, some the crosshair itself breaks. I have one that the left side of the cross just fell off. I have all re-fitted my scope to air gun rated scopes that can handle the unique dual recoil springers have. A good scope is also an investment to compliment it so it stays zeroed in and does not creep.

Hi Mike, a big welcome to the GTA forum and family.  Looks like those "Package" Gamo and Centerpoint scopes have gone south on your son.  If they're rotating but still holds "Zero" keep on using them....unless he needs the cross-hairs for elevation and windage.  If he needs to adjust the crosshairs every few shots...time to upgrade to a better scope (Airgun rated).

Yeah, the packaged scopes are usually not terribly reliable. It'll matter what gun you have them on. A springer-rated scope is recommended for most medium and high-powered springers...Hawke makes some good lower-price models as does bushnell. You can spend a lot on a scope. Don't until you are sure it is what you need!

My Gamo 3-9 scope rotated the crosshairs also.
During a shooting session I noticed the shots were walking off with each shot. I adjusted windage and elevation to compensate, but then noticed I was canting the gun to keep the crosshairs plumb. Fired a few more to check crosshairs rotating and the gun had to be canted about 10 degrees left to plumb up the crosshairs. Took it off and got a Leapers 3-12 Mini Swat.

The Leapers starting going at about 1000 pellets. The side adjustable AO wouldn't hold adjustment for more than a few shots, then a few hundred pellets later, it got so bad it was too blurry to see anything after each shot.

Now I've got an old Bushnell Sportview 3-9 x 32 on it. So far it's stayed clear enough I can see the Jumbo heavies for a split second at the top of their arc.  See how long that lasts.

one was a crosman g1 with a 3-9x40 centerpoint, the other was a gamo big cat with a 3-9x40 gamo scope....
