Quick hunt
« on: February 25, 2010, 12:35:24 PM »
Just a quick little after work outing. I know it’s nowhere near as exciting as reading about Randy’s night hunting success. Way to go Randy, you put some time in to get the Raccoon.  Great shooting and congratulations Randy.

I only had to drive a few miles to find a tree that was full of “black birds”. I pulled off the side of the dirt road and started looking them over. In total there were probably around 40 or so birds nervously hopping about in the tree.  Just as I was sure they were all Red Winged Blackbirds, which are off limits, 3 Starlings come in and land with the group. I grabbed the Remington Summit and loaded Gamo Red Fire. It took me awhile to locate the target because of all the other birds but when I did I saw that it was facing away. I guessed the range to be about 30 yards, centered the cross hairs high on its silhouette and gently pulled the trigger. At the shot all the birds took flight but I heard the pellet hit home and watched my starling falling towards the ground. It wasn’t stone cold dead but I didn’t think it was going anywhere.

The B25 in the picture (Thanks MM) is new and I still haven’t scored with it yet, but I’m hopeful for this weekend. After the photo op I but the guns away and stashed the bird where no cats will get to it. After I finish my nightly honey does I’m going to run the bird under my metal detector and see if the pellet stayed in. If so I will perform a post mortem to see what kind shape it’s in. I'm really satisfied with the way they perform in the Summit.

The live looking bird in the picture is Chancho, my starling decoy.

Finally got around to running the metal detector over the starling and the pellet had passed right on through. I was really hoping to retreive the pellet and see what kind of shape it was going to be in. The starlings are considerably larger than the sparrows that I've recently shot, but the fact that this pellet reaked so much havoc on the little birds I didn't think it would pass throught the much larger Starling at about 30 yards. The other thing I find so interesting is this bird was stone cold dead when I got to it after the shot. But the next day I shot another starling from the same tree and shot from the exact same distance and location, this was the bird that fell at the shot, boucing of limbs the entire way down, only to right himself and fake flight just a few feet of the ground. I guess shot placement is the key. But if all things were equal that means this bird flew off after a complete pass through. Tomorrow I will give the B25 another shot at redemption. And the B28 still needs it first.

Well  I was kind of hoping for something special for that gun, not just your everday average run of the mill Starling. But maybe the Asian Beast is just what is needed for these super strong Starlings.

I know it runs counter to conventional thought, but I'd think a soft pellet like a Daisy Wadcutter would be the best for the Chi-Beast for Starling shoosting.  I know the hard pellets just blow right through stuff.  We need "frangible" ammo!
