Are Match pellets effective for hunting?
« on: March 09, 2010, 12:38:04 PM »
8.2 grains and flat nosed. My gun shoots them well. Im guessing they would be about as good as a Hp but at shorter ranges...20-30 yards?

Maybe for feather but I personally wouldn't use them on other critters. I have a new tin of flat nose paper puncher's gathering dust in my tin cabinet. Ed

Like Ed said.... they work well on birds.  I've used them many times on starlings and they knocked the yellow beaks down hard and cleanly, plus you get to hear that loud "smack" sound  :)

As for small game....... I agree with Ed here as well.... I wouldn't opt to use them for small game hunting...

I'm not saying that a well placed head shot at reasonable distance wouldn't take down a squirrel or rabbit,, it might,,, but I'd rather use a good domed pellet or a predator..

I`ve taking out a few Starlings with flat-nosed pellets.....nothing above 25 yards though.  My proudest moment.....my <500fps Diana model 24 took out a Crow at 26 yards with a .177 Crosman wad (The cheap kind).....a lucky head-shot....was aiming at the body.

I have the CPHP and the CP rounds. I also have the Predaors. The Crossman Premier rounds seem to be accurate but is the would channel good enough for Rabbit and Squirrel?

The Answer is YES. Read John Darling's book, "Air Rifle Hunting". Wadcutters are all he used. He took more rabbits with wadcutters than you or I will probably ever even see in our life times.

Wadcutters as a rule are not used for hunting but are designed for target shooting and  paper punching/plinking and sometimes used for birds if not too far out. Not a good idea for critters and often will not have much penetration on thick skinned animals like squirrels.  The velocity drops pretty rapidly and accuracy can start suffering as well beyond 20-25 yards. At close range though they can have  big impact.

One way to think of it is take it more to the extream .....  slapping a critter with a ping-pong paddle, or stabbing it with a knife  - with both methods using roughly the same amount of energy. Now, which will kill a greater range of critter sizes more reliably?

One of the rules of being an "ethical hunter" is to train with and use the right equipment to dispatch an animal as quickly as possable. That includes using the best ammo choices for the game being hunted.  Target ammo generally isn't accepted as the "best" choice to get good, reliable penitration to provide as quick a kill as possable.

The only pellet my 800 mag shoots well with are miesterkuglins wads.177 and up too 20 yards with a good bugbuster scope (6x32) ive killed several birds but because the pistol is heavy and you have too have a steady hand i try to shoot within 15 yrds (most of my kills)hobby pellets for now are working out fine.
keep your eyes on the prize & dont let it crawl away.
