Ghillie Suits
« on: May 07, 2007, 08:26:16 AM »
Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to know if any of ya'll had a ghillie suit?  If so I would love to see pictures and hear tips.  I have tried to make a few unsuccessfully.  Currently though I am working on one that is going to turn out great.  I'll post pics if I ever get finished with it.  It could be a month or two though.

Hi Brian,

The easiest way to build a ghillie, is to start with a basic como b.d.u. Add burlap strips 24" long, colored, take a boonie hat and dress her with burlap strips and your off. Make sure to make loops in the back to add natural foliage and grasses.

Then : Don't do anything that I wouldn't do !!!:p

P.S. Keep it loose but not noisy !!! :o

This is a Ghille suit that I made a couple of year's ago, pulled it out of retirement to hunt in S.D.. I used a old wool pull over and cut strip's of different material's with different textures and color's. Green's, tan's etc. The length's were from 3in. to 3ft. and stitched and stitched some more.I used 2lb. fishing line for thread, :o hold's up better when your crawling or stalking through heavy brush. Add a little leafy stuff, go down to the craft store and sort through their plastic flower's and green leaf's. The mask ,I had some old webbing and designed a camo pattern for it and painted it. Took this pic last season, didn't have no green out around the eye's and camo glove's on. I'm adding some different leafy stuff for this summer's hunt. Ed

I`m slowly making one using a DPM jacket as a base.Yes the sewing is a pain, and its not something you walk down the street in :p  but should be ok when finished I got some good ideas from the airsoft sites particularly this one : http://airsoftsniper.darc.net/

I helped my brother-in-law make a Ghillie jacket. Total cost was about 35 bucks.

I gave him one of my old BDU tops and we stitched cheap hammock netting over the back & shoulders. We used dental floss to make sure the stitches wouldn't pop.

For the cover, he already had a few burlap potato bags. Dyed a couple of them black, a couple dark green and one reddish brown with rit dye. After they were dry, they were cut into 1/2" wide strips. He also got some brown, red, khaki & dark orange knitting yarn.

We didn't sew any of the cover on. Just cut the strips & yarn to length and tied it onto the netting with a couple drops of super glue at the knots. Once the burlap was tied on, we frayed it a bit. The lengths vary from a couple inches to almost a foot. After it was done, he put it on and rolled around in the dirt a little bit. Looks real good. I'll see if I can get some pix this afternoon. We tried one where we sewed all the stuff on, but it layed down too flat & didn't look very natural.

This isn't his, but it looks similar. His is a bit more "Poofy"

This is a picture of the one I am currently working on.  I picked up this really light weight super strong camo mesh jacket at the gun show this past weekend.  There was a guy there who was making ghillie suits out of them and I had been looking for a net to go on the one I was currently working on.  I have actually been pulling apart burlap and cutting it to different lengths and tying it on.  The only problem is the green color isn't actually right.  Its too dark!!  I also bought some white burlap that I tried to dye with natural dyes but it ended in disaster.  Does anyone have tips on how I can dye this stuff?  Right now I am experimenting with bleaching it a little.  Its kind of difficult but it is working out fairly well.  Oh yeah, I have a custom fit bdu jacket that I sewed with reinforced arms and thumb loops that I am planning on wearing under this.

Brian,go to Wally World and get some Rit Dye, several colors to choose from, works good and it is cheap.
